Several years ago at a Fire Safety seminar at a rally, Mack the Fire Guy asked how many ran with the propane valve on. Many hands went up. He then asked how many of those were professional Fire Fighters and all the hands went down. He then said that he had never had a Fire Fighter admit to running with the propane on. As a retired volunteer fire fighter I found that interesting.
Without going into details we once had an incident that made me glad that we rarely run with the propane valve open.
Any professional Fire Fighters care to comment?
Yes. I was a professional volunteer fire fighter. I left as a deputy chief. I had to quit because I needed a heart valve replaced.
I also hauled hazmat for 17 years. All of the years petroleum products, including propane. I know a little about the stuff.
I drive with my fridge on almost always. I have also driven with my furnace on. Both TC and 5er. If something happens, and say a hose breaks between the tank and the regulator, the excess flow valve will close. If it is after the regulator, well, it is regulated.
As a test, unhook the hose from your tank, and open the valve on your tank. You will not get any gas out of it. If you do, go to your local dealer and get the tank replaced. After you shut the valve. ;)
Don't take my word for any of this. Do the test. I do on all my tanks.
Edit:
Not only shut off your propane, but also the control power to the fridge or furnace at a gas station. Just shutting off the gas is not enough. The ignitor will try to relight the appliance. That is what will cause an explosion.
