shortest tag axle class A?

We have a 38.5 HR Ambassador with a 10K hitch. We tow a 20 ft enclosed trailer with a car and toys. It is a hassle from time to time but not terrible if you plan ahead.
ALL that said for normal travel I would use 4 down or a dolly. On the other hand I track my car and part of our travels are based on that. Parts tires etc. Make the trailer part of the deal.

I know those that may tow longer trailers with bigger rigs but for us 63feet is enough of a PITB..

Thanks SMIranger... it's been a good one over the ten OOPs the 11 years I've owned it. With that name and using a SMI braking system, I'll post the picture of my $30 braking system at the end.

The winch raises the car up on a ball turned down. The cable does not carry the weight once up as there are two bars that I put in under the A frame that stop the A frame from going down. The winch is 3' above the A frame so the cable runs at about a 45 degree angle.
The biggest advantage is I can back up... a lot easier than I thought it would be because of the long overhang off the back plus the A frame. I also get to discuss how many axles I have on the ground at the toll booth.





Here is a better view of what's on the MH and the two angle irons that go under the A frame. I had to add the two extra hitch receivers.



I've pulled this way for 70K behind this MH and another 20K behind a previous MH. I'm a little surprised how little wear on the ball and coupler over 90K miles.

Will not get into the argument on tags - except to say we LOVE ours and I had one on the 37' gas Trop-I-Cal we had before the TS.

Back when dinosaurs ruled the earth, Blue Bird made some of their Wanderlodge coachs 36' long with a tag axle from 1982 to 1987.



In response to the a previous post on this thread, there is an opportunity to incur extra costs with a tag. With a coach without abs, it is possible to flat spot the tag axle tires while urgent braking to avoid an idiot driver who suddenly swerves into the safety gap in front you and brakes after he spots the slowing traffic ahead.

Just saying we never had any expense with our tag on our previous coach in almost 70,000 miles and 7.5 yrs. Never had air bag issues, no lifting issues, no parts issue.

Sure it can happen but it's not common. We bought a set of new tires at 57,000 miles so the tag cost me $683 per wheel. If that's going to break the bank in the 'expense' dept., then go with a non tag.

Monaco made a Dynasty 37 with a tag. Here is a 37 Country Coach with tag.

The shortest tag axle that I've seen on a Class A RV has been 38 feet! That RV was stuck in the sand along side the Rogue River about 12 miles upstream from it's mouth (Gold Beach). He had the best spot on the River until it was time to leave. There was a bridge and a campground with a unimproved side road going out to the River from the campground.

Just don't understand the 'extra' expense of a tag.
