What you are describing is typical of a bad battery connection. It will start to conduct better when it heats up. This condition does not exist long before it fails.
Do this....
Next time you try to start it, as soon as it cranks, let go of the key and feel the battery and starter connections including the grounds. One may be warm. If you find it - Fix it.

might check the battery connections at the starter also. Have seen them loosen up and cause the condition you described.

So to be clear - you turn the key to start, but nothing happens for 3-5 seconds before it will actually crank?

My guess would be the starter solenoid. On the Fords I *think* it's separate from the starter motor itself so it should be easy to replace once you locate it (on GMs it's mounted to the starter).

I've seen starter solenoids be slow to engage. Put a meter on it and have somebody turn the key.
4 whopping cylinders on Toyota RV's. Talk about great getting good MPG. Also I have a very light foot on the pedal. I followed some MPG advice on Livingpress.com and I now get 22 MPG! Not bad for a home on wheels.
