Spare Tire....How many of you carry one?

I have a spare but it is heavy. I need to weigh it but probably around 70#. I have to carry it in a storage compartment and it takes up quite a bit of space.

I know having a spare tire is essential if a flat tire happens, but.......

That being said, in my Class C, GVWR is at a premium. I'd rather have that 70# be used for other items.

I also don't like to have to carry it in one of my storage compartments. Its big bulky, and awkward to lift.

How many of you carry a spare?

Where is it carried?

Have any of you built a spare tire carrier UNDER the rear of your Class C?

I carry a spare tire. Came with the C. Probably would have put a spare onboard if the rig did not come with one.

Spare Tire....How many of you carry one?

Yes. Would never leave home without a spare on board the MH.

Mine is mounted on the bumper. Made for RV square bumpers. This style type mount allows me to also store my lawn chairs on it. It is designed for bikes so those with bikes it would be a dual purpose mount.

I also have a white spare tire cover on the tire which makes it look a little nicer. ADCO makes a real nice tire cover.

There also is this type of square RV bumper spare tire mount that just bolts the tire to a mount.

We lost the air in our passenger side outside rear dual tire once. We drove several miles at around 5 MPH this way in our small Class C until we got to a shop that could repair it ... but the paved road had a decent shoulder so that we could carefully and safely drive this way.

This is not a recommended thing to do though, as it puts a huge over-load on the remaining tire. It's not at all the same situation as where an unloaded or lightly loaded dually pickup loses one of it's rear tires.

I use the jack all the time, to get my rig up on stands when blocks are not enough for leveling. So it's not a waste of weight!

I carry a spare. Could I change it myself? Eh, if I really had to. But as others have said, it's good just to have it there for EMS or a friendly stranger to put on.

I don't worry about the age of a spare. When I get new tires, I have them save the best old one to be the new spare. If I have to use it, I don't think it's going to blow out before I find a tire store.

I have been known to carry TWO spares, when serious boondocking. Didn't use either one.

My Ford E450 chassis does not have a factory one installed underneath behind rear axle. I would like to install one in that location. Are they available from Ford or another source?

The OEM chassis is too short for a mount, and Ford does not provide a spare in the RV options package for E-350/450. The RV manufacturers, if they provide a spare and under chassis mount, will put the mount in their extension of the OEM frame, unless they've decided to use that for something like wastewater tanks.

I carry one, have never used it, maintain the pressure for use on rear dually. It hangs on mount Winnebago provided under rear of motorhome. Not all manufacturers provide for a spare, salesmen can come up with a "liability" excuse for those who don't.

We carry a spare. Would not consider traveling without one. Also carry a tire wrench, proper jack, and torque wrench. The spare is 2yrs old.

At this point I can still replace a tire if we have a flat. At some point that will change, but will still carry a spare. As some others have stated, the vehicle responding may not have the correct size tire for my rig and if they do, the price may be pretty high, plus could be sitting for some time waiting for service to arrive.

If I was traveling without a spare it would only be in areas where I had cell coverage and on paved roads. That is not a problem for some.

Ours didn't come with one. I bought a new tire and a used rim. It sits in a storage bay, but we have plenty of space. It's not an issue with us....

When I replaced my tires about 2 years ago, I replaced the spare also. It is no older than the tires on the road. I consider it cheap insurance for my family's safety.

I don't carry a jack or lug wrench. I am not going to change my tire, but when roadside assistance gets there, the spare will be ready for them to install.

I am also considering not having a spare on my Class C.
Why?
1- I can not physically able change one of the tires any more.
2- My spare is out of date. Has never touched the ground!
When was the last time you checked the "born date" on your spare?
3- Space for carrying the proper jack and having an electric or compressor impact wrench to remove it is a waste.
4- I would end up calling road service anyway.

We've found that we cannot always get cellular reception to call ERS on certain highways out West ... and off-highway where we sometimes travel (if ERS would even venture onto gravel or dirt roads if we could phone them).

However, our Class C is small enough that I COULD unmount our 16 inch spare from it's storage position and replace a bad running tire if we had to out in the middle of nowhere.

On my previous Winnebago View there was one mounted under the rig right behind the rear axle. On our new Super C(waiting for them to finish it now) there is no spare but I don't know about anyone else but I'm not about ready to try and wrestle a 22.5 tire and rim and install it on the rig. I had enough trouble with 19.5s and 22.5s are even heavier.

I think I'll be waiting for road site assistance for a tire repair.

Spare Tire Winch

Mine is mounted under the frame with a wench similar to that one. GS mounted it there. In 10 years I have needed it 2 times.
Would not be without one.

YES to carrying a spare tire. For any and all the reasons above. Our older Holiday had a "Continental Kit" molded into the rear end cap. Sweet! Tire was right there and out of sight. On this Jayco, the spare was mounted "Lollipop Style" with a vertical bracket that clamped to the square steel box bumper. Like others have reported, the square bumper steel started to tear where welded to its frame brackets. Tire's been under the queen bed since. Like it? NO!!! Want a Spare more than the Inconvenience? YES!!!
I don't think I'd mount a spare to the back wall of an RV that either wasn't designed to support that weight, or where I could not find that it was adequately framed. I just might do a hybrid: REST the tire on the square bumper but hold it in place with a mounting on the rear wall. I don't think the weight of the spare is what tears the bumper. I think it's the leverage that weight gets when it's up on the Lollipop Mount.
