Sprung a Leak!

The left rear seal is leaking on our 02 Holiday Rambler 34 DP. It's spraying gear oil on the outside of the wheel and down the side of the MH plus the side of the toad.

I spoke with a friend who said that there are two seals. An inner and outer one. By the sounds of it, the outer one is leaking. I checked the vent on top of the case and cleaned it real good. Still leaks.

Has anyone here had any experience with changing the outer seal? My friend said it's not too difficult of a job. It might be an O-ring type seal.

We are in Duluth,MN traveling to the Upper Peninsula of MI to host a campground for the summer. Having a fantastic time with our new-2-us MH. It has been a great trip. Cruising at a steady 65 averaging 450 mi a day. :)

Anyway.. if anyone has any input, it would be appreciated!

Any truck repair center should be able to fix pretty quick and easy. Continue to drive as is,besides the mess, you will do catastrophic damage when it runs low on fluid!
  • It is not a complicated fix and shouldn't cost too much to repair. Basically they have to pull the axle out, clean the gasket surfaces, remove the old paper gasket, replace with a bead of silicone seal, let the silicone set up, refill the differential, and you are good to go. They don't even need to pull a wheel. It may take an hour to do and about a bucks worth of materials to complete.
  • I do a bunch of my own stuff, on this one I'd let the truck guys handle it. To start with is the 450 lb/ft of torque required on the lug nuts.

For a decent shop this shouldn't be more than a couple of hours.
  • Thanks for the replies. I called a shop and will be bringing it in later this morning.
