starter on Onan Marquis 7000W

starter spins but does not engage the fly wheel. two bolts hold it on and looks like a pain in the back to get to. Also a small gauge wire bolted on. I tapped on the starter a few times to no luck. Anyone else have this problem? Never had a problem with it starting before. Any pointers for removal and what I am going to be looking at once I get it off would be greatly appreciated.
  • Take it to a starter alternator rebuild shop may get it done cheaper than you think . If you have time for it to be down for a few days. Have them go through it while they have it. Good as new.
  • My parts source is the local Cummins / Onan repair facility so I'm not sure about availability from the normal outlets like NAPA, etc. Have you complete generator model number and probably serial No. when out looking for gen parts from Onan.
  • Well I was hoping to be able to pull the starter out from the top..and from what I am reading is that the generator will need to be dropped or tilted somewhat for clearance for removal of the starter. Lol, nothing seems to be easy! As to get parts for the starter, is that going to require a trip to the RV Shop or will local parts store have them?
  • On my Coachmen, I rotated the Marquis 7KW down so the top cover could be removed to replace the starter. I put a floor jack under the front edge of the bottom pan, loosened, but did not remove, the two rear mounting bolts, and then removed the remaining bolts before lowering the jack to tilt the generator down. On my setup, the wiring and fuel line are installed with enough slack so they did not need to be disconnected. The exhaust is only connected to the generator, so it just tilted down with the rest of the unit. The actual starter replacement only took a few minutes.
  • Your bendix gear assembly went south. About $50. My 7000 NHM had a drift pin that had to be driven out as part of the repair process. Really pretty simple though.

And I had to drop the generator down somewhat to get clearance to remove the starter. The muffler / tail pipe had to be removed and fuel line of course. Wiring had enough extra length to allow sufficient movement of the generator to not require removal.

That generator is real heavy so do use caution when working with it. I used lots of wood cribbing under mine.
