The GPS is used to write a data file that when used with the software they provide, can show your route, speed, time, while playing the video back.
The GPS is also use to display your speed on the video. But it isn't usable for route planning.
The camera also has an accelerometer, which detects extreme g-forces, and in the event of an accident, will lock the preceding 15 minutes of video and prevent overwriting.
