The biggest impact is if you tap the brakes on a downhill, it will automatically downshift providing some engine braking. Tap it again if you need more. Having the RPM up around 3000-3500 provides a lot of braking and won't hurt anything (even up into the 4000's is fine but I try no to let things get that far out of hand).
At least with our F250, it will also start downshifting if you are coasting up to a stop light which reduces brake wear.
I don't have an issue with it but upshifting while accelerating I don't find as much benefit.
As a motorhome, it should always be in tow/haul as you never run lightly loaded.
