Towing concern(s)

Can a 24ft class B with either a Ford V10 or a Mercedes 6 cylinder be capable of towing a Jeep Liberty that weighs in at 3800 lbs?

Ive never had a class B with either engine so Im at a total loss to this question.

Thanks
  • I'm fairly certain the OP is asking about a B+/C. Most RV's of this type are rated to tow 5,000 lbs. And most states now require a braking system on anything over 2500 lbs that you tow.

The variables, though, are many. If your RV is already heavy and loaded to near it's maximum rated weight, then you may be borderline on towing. Also, considering where you are going you might be OK. Planning on sticking to flatlands? Then maybe it's OK. Want to cross the Rockies? Then probably forget it.

Most folks experienced at towing are going to recommend you have plenty of reserve power in both engine and braking. That may be a bit conservative, but it's hard to argue that it's not the safest approach.

Others will say that the point of buying a smaller RV is avoiding the need to have a tow vehicle in the first place. You still see many people doing it, as the convenience of having a car along trumps the inconvenience of dealing with towing a car, at least for them. You hardly ever see a B-van towing a car.

Whatever you decide to do, good luck! Personally, I'd look for a much lighter tow car for a small RV. Something like a smart car or a geo metro is probably easier to deal with behind a small RV with marginal tow capacity.
  • Good afternoon. I can't comment on the specifics of your rig without knowing more but as an example our little rig towed a 4500 pound grand cherokee with no problem. Having said that I didn't like how it felt as our rig has a short wheelbase. Towing wise its fine but now when we tow it is a smart car on a trailer as we no longer have the jeep. Here is a picture of our E350 based little rig for reference.

Can you tow it? Sure. Is it a good idea? Well, that's a definite maybe. I'm assuming you have a B+ (actually a class C) since 24 feet is rather long for a B. I'm also assuming you have an automatic transmission. You will definitely need a transmission cooler in addition to the radiator. You'll need a unit with proper gearing. 3.5 won't cut it but 4.11 might. Lastly, you'll need to have brakes on the toad. Are you going to use a dolly or flat tow it? That extra 2 tons can overwhelm your braking system and you won't know it until you can't stop.
  • I think you may be in the wrong forum. There are no 24' Class B's on a Ford chassis.
I think you are confusing what some call a B+, which is actually a Class C without the over the cab bed.
