Towing is towing right?

Toad is just a nickname for a Towed motor vehicle. And no towing a toad isn't the same as a trailer in a couple of areas. The toad is usually pretty small as compared to the tow vehicle so you don't have many sway issues or things of that nature from the toad like you may from a trailer. The biggest different is you generally cannot backup with a toad. So you have to be very careful about getting into spots that you cannot pull forward out of. I have twice got myself into those spots and had to go back and unhook the toad to get out.

One of my main reasons for going with the Class A versus the trailer is I really didn't want to have a monster truck as a daily driver. My toad is a Dodge Dakota and it's a perfect size truck for me. Small enough to be towed by the motorhome and small enough to fit in most parking spaces, yet still has 4x4 and a truck bed to haul junk around and be used as a daily driver. And it fits in the garage.

A toad normally will not make the motorhome wiggle. And you are in the 18,000 pound vehicle with a 3,500 pound toad behind you, not in a 7,800 pound truck with a 11,000 trailer behind you.

So I have a motorhome, and tow a Ford Edge. There are a lot more smaller vehicles you can tow just fine, however the Edge fits me - at 6'4" tall fine.

I also get around 7 - 7.5 MPG, depending on how fast I am going. Yet if I buy premium gas, and go only 55, I can get up to 8.8 MPG.

If you go with a gasser, you will need to check it's towing capacity. It might only have 3,500 lb. hitch, could be more. The Lincoln Town Car might be too big (we have an inherited '07 Town Car in our fleet and they are big and heavy)....we tow a Honda CR-V which is about 3,500 lbs., seats five, plenty of storage and good gas mileage. Our towing capacity is 10,000 lbs. so don't even know the Honda is back there.

We get about 7.0- 7.5 mpg's towing a 3,500 lb. Honda and the coach weighs 40,000 lbs.

Lincoln Town Car does not make a good tow car, it can be done but would be better to sell car and get something smaller.

I use to tow a TT and glad I have a motorhome now, my toad is a Jeep Wrangler and don't even know its there.

I dought Town Car is towable 4 down without a transmission lube oil pump.

when you are looking at those 2000ish MHs, be sure the Ford is on a 1999 or more recent chassis that doesn't have the 16 inch rims, and if on a chevy/workhorse chassis it isn't the old P-30/32 model. workhorse rebadged some of them before they fixed their issues.
and NO , you won't be towing that town car with any gasser.

My 2001 V-10 gasser, like most, has a 5000 pound towing limit. Combine that with the vehicles that CAN be towed 4-down, you've got some research to do.
Most of it, on this forum, has already been done. Reseach the topic.
I tow a 2007 ChevyHHR automatic. Pull a 2 amp fuse,leave the key in the ignition (to keep the steering wheel free), put 'er in "N" and off y'go.
Also tow a 2011 Ford Ranger 4WD auto. Proceedure is a bit more complicated (and expensive)...you would need a $400 "Transfer Case Neutral Kit"...a Ford only item....and my original towed car was a 1996 Ford Contour, 5 spd stick.
Quite a few other vehicles to choose from, GM seems to have the most in various price ranges, so go for it. Then you need a baseplate for the car/truck you choose...and a towbar with wiring for either the magnetic lights or the diode kits. Thata's about 800+ bucks. See www.blueox.com
That's the outfit I use....I have both vehicles using the same style baseplates, so I can use the same towbar for either one.
As far as mpg....figure a V-10 = 7.5 at best.
As far as the REMCO driveshaft disconnect, I've spoken to maybe 4 owners, and they like the product...but you DO have to keep it "clean" by spraying it quite often with WD-40 or silicone...but they say they're happy with it. As far as the "lube pump"...y'gotta drill a few holes...and to me, that means the possibility of oil leaks...and the price (installed) seems to me, to be too much to be practical....but then again, posters here who claim to have that product are happy with it.
So..whatever you do...g'luck.

Back in '69 we bought a new Layton 21' TT and then a Continental to tow it. That was a great combination. A Lincoln does not make a great toad behind a gasser. I had to go to lighter cars to be able to tow behind my MHs. It would be well worth getting the 8.1L over the 454 but the 454 Vortec that came out in '96 was pretty good also. We have been RVing since the '69 Layton and have had almost everything in that time from popup to 39'MH. You are righyt in it being easier to travel with the family ready to pull in for the night. I would not encourage the electronic games myself. There is a lot to be learned from passing through the different areas of the country. We have been to 48 states & from B.C. to Nova Scotia in Canada with children & Grandchildren.

I also went from a TT to a MH and the differance in towing is night and day.

First, if you are towing 4 down there is no sway concerns, so no sway control necessary.

Second, if 4 down there is virtually no hitch wt so no W/D asst needed.

Depending on the coach you can literally fall into the "I don't know it's behind me" category.

On out first trip when I was finished setting up I wandered around trying to figure out what I missed it was so fast and easy.
