towing with a class c

As a general rule, can class C motorhomes be used to tow a small car? We're looking at a used Winnebago outlook 29b with a Ford v-10 gas engine, but we're not set on purchasing it yet. As far as passengers, it will be just two average-sized adults.
  • Towing is no problem at all with a class C. Do some research and get the right equipment. I put together this site "How to Tow a Car With Your RV" that may be a helpful starting point.

We tow a Honda CRV with our 32ft class C.
  • I tow a 2600 pound Honda Fit with my 2004 (Itasca Spirit) 29B, don't even have the off-the-line advantage of lower first to gears in the later E-450 chassis. Before that I towed a 3600 pound regular-cab Ford Ranger.

The RV had no problem towing either. My hitch, Winnebago factory install, is rated 5000 pounds for a flat tow, 350 max tongue weight. Quite likely Winnebago is still using that model hitch. They put it there OEM so delivery drivers can tow their come back home cars.
  • I had a Holiday Rambler Atlantis 29 footer with Ford's V10. It had a 5000# hitch and I towed a 2006 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon. The Jeep weight around 5000# given all the aftermarket upgrades. The motorhome struggled on any uphill grade.

You will also want to take a close look at the motorhome's cargo carrying capacity. Mine was well under 1000# and it is very easy to put more than that in a 29 footer.

  • Our 2007 Honda Civic Manual Transmission weighs in at 3100 pounds and we tow it 4 down CONTRARY to the Owners Manual.

We did the same with a 1990 Accord and a 2001 Civic, all manual transmissions and the same warning in the Owners Manual.
  • Yes you can. Just make sure the car you want to tow is capable of being towed and its weight is less than the max weight your Class C is rated to tow.

Many 4wd cars, such as the Subaru, can only be towed if they are manual transmission.
  • I tow this with my 07 Winnebago Outlook 31C on a Ford V-10:

  • Be aware that a fair percentage of cars _cannot_ be towed four-wheels-down. You'll need to check in the car owner's manual, or with the brand dealers' service department.

  • We have an 06 Outlook 29B, and tow a 3500lb CRV, no problems. Our hitch is rated for 5000lbs and Winnebago derated the tongue weight to 350lbs (frame extensions). Only about 20lbs tongue weight with the tow bar.
The V-10 does not even know the Honda is back there, same gas mileage towing or not, 7.5 to 9 mpg, totally dependent on the weight of my right foot.

  • I have a 31K chateau and I pull a JEEP wrangler..no problem. Just have the correct tow bar and auxillary brake system-should be no problem.
