Traffic thru Atlanta

I here that there is construction in down town Atlanta! How is the traffic, heading to Florida next week.
Thanks for all comments
  • I just came through Atlanta this morning, heading north. Surprisingly very little traffic........but it was 3.30am!;)
I had a long drive ahead of me and I didn't want to get into rush hour traffic.

Going to do the same with St. Louis tomorrow morning.
  • Thanks for all the replies. When straight thru today (Monday) around 11 am, no problem, did slow down a little. Yes there is construction every where in Atlanta.
    Be SAFE
  • Do not get on the bypass. I tow a 40 ft 5th wheel and went straight thru Atlanta on I-75 with absolutely No problems last Saturday.
  • I'm not sure which direction you're coming from, but there's a ton of construction going on right now on I-285 (the bypass) and, although I normally recommend that, right now it can be way worse than a straight shot through downtown. (I-285 west-side southbound was closed down to 2 lanes last Sunday!) The advice above is right: check any information source that shows construction/traffic before committing to the route.
  • If you are continuing south on I75, there is usually a lot of congestion around Henry County area which is just south of I675 merge. It can be worse than downtown at times.
  • Straight through i75 mid day or evening. Google map navigation is good at warning you of real time delays and swithing to bypass. Morning and afternoon is a mess though.
  • listen to 95.5 fm or 750 am for their traffic reports and base your route on that

    Take the bypass...

Depends on which intersate you are coming in on. I go straight through on 75 mid day. Do not stay in the right lane as two will become exits without much warning. On 75 south bound this happens first at the bypass/285, then after 75/85 come together at Williams and then for I-20 on the south side of downtown. I use the HOV lane put you need to be willing to put the pedal down if traffic is moving well. When 85 joins do not be concerned about the sharp curve/20 MPH signs as they are for those getting on 85.
