Trailer Hitch excessive height

How far does it need to drop to get a level trailer?

You would be better off with something like thisadjustable hitch I use a weight distribution hitch and drop it about 8-10", hitch does scrape on some driveway transitions but not too bad.

How far exactly do you need to drop?

Once you know how far you need to drop, buy a fixed drop bar. Super deep ones will usually have a gusset on them, much stronger than some kludged together drop + drop setup.

Another alternative might be to put a raised coupler on the trailer (either in lieu of or in addition to the current coupler). In many cases, for someone who knows what they're doing, this ought to be a pretty straightforward welding job.

I had a welding shop fabricate a drop down hitch to the height needed to make the trailer level. Basically they took my hitch and welded a plate on either side of the square bar and then added a new bar to the top of the plates. Filled in the front and back with plates to close up the addition. I had them put a handle on top to make it easier to insert and remove plus carry.

Wolfe pointed you to Roadmaster and their 10 inch drop is rated for 10,000 pounds. Probably more than the MH rating.

Blue Ox has drop hitches up to 13" (not adjustable) I think I'm using 4" for my Damon Interuder to most US cars (Both of the towed's I have had).

NOTE: use of a DROP or RISE hitch adapter puts a TORQUE load on the cross bar.. THIS can cause it to twist right off the frame rail.. MINE DID even though my towed was only 80% of the rating of the hitch assembly.

THe repair shop (Simpson and sons in Indiana I think or Ohio near the border on off I think 71, been a long time) did a fantastic job of rebuilding and in fact OVER BUILDING no recurrence has happened.

So if you use a drop hitch inspect the brackets where the cross bar attaches tot he frame every time you hook up.

The tongue weight on the Roadmaster hitch is to low, a drop hitch would be better, I have a 6 inch drop hitch with a 7500lb rating with 750lb tonged.


OPer you will just have to measure and buy a drop hitch, its ok to have the trailer tilted up just a tad.
