used Class C

Am looking at a 2006 Winnebago 29 foot class C with 2 slides. Unit is equipped with exactly what we have been looking for. It has 53000 miles, and is in really good condition. The unit is consigned to PPL RVs. Price is 35k, but is somewhat negotiable. While we have pulled large 5th wheels for many years, this is our first venture into the motorhome world. Have gotten a real good idea of what to look for in the used unit from previous threads on this subject, but, would like some opinions on the age, mileage, price, as well as PPL RV. Thanks much...
  • I looked at a couple of Rvs on the PPL website. They usually start off high and drop the price every 7-10 days until they get to the owners bottom price. They will submit any deal to the owner. If the motorhome you are looking at has been on the lot for awhile they maybe at the bottom.

  • We purchased a New Horizon fifth wheel from ppl sight unseen in 2009 and we were very happy with their honesty and how they handled the transaction. We didn't keep it long and decided to go with a class C.

Less than 2 months ago we bought a 2007 27ft Lazy Daze class C with 43,000 miles for $41,000 from a private seller. The unit was in excellent condition (almost like new) with new tires and a new water heater. I don't have much to compare used C's on except for what we paid so the price for the Winnie sounds comparable to what we got.

    Have fun and travel safe.

Just as an after thought, if one can buy somewhere around NADA low retail, (WITH NO OPTIONS added in). Assuming it is great shape with newer tires etc. And is exactly what you want, I would think, go for it.
You are not going to get hurt to bad, as a general rule. In my opinion

Could you buy it cheaper? Maybe, but it could take lots and lots of looking, lots of miles and lots of stress. As for PPL, I have no knowledge as to good or bad
  • NADA low book says 38k, so at 35k, for exactly what you want I think it sounds great. Assuming it is in great shape

Bev and Ken, I admit I am no expert, and my rig is 24 ft. But we do when leaving on a long trip run a couple hundred pounds over. ( full of fuel, water, grandkid, dog etc) . And you are burning off gasoline at 6 gallons per hour and gas weighs what? I believe 6-8 pounds.

But running those pressures you mention, from 10 years, experience and 60k miles. At least on ours, it would ride horrible. We run 65 rear, 60 front. Tires have never overheated. (I know because I check) and as you know under inflation is mostly what overheats tires and causes them to blow.

Our best ride is those pressures in the tires, and 10 lbs in the bags

But I am sure each rig is different as is each persons idea of what makes a good ride.
  • Asking price may be a little high depending on going prices in your area.
Standard advice is to have a good truck mechanic and an RV service go through chassis and house box and give you written estimates for any repairs or replacements needed. Make sure that high cost things work properly, i.e. RV generator with roof AC and microwave working, furnace, converter charger and house batteries, awning, and fridge in both propane and AC modes. Tires older than 4 years old may need replacing, engine cooling system and brakes should all be checked and brake fluid flushed/replaced.

What model, which engine? Check my sig below.

    Model is 27L with a
    ford V-10, 6.8 liter 305hp
  • Sounds like ours, '06 Winnie Outlook 29b. We have 40000 miles on ours, no major issues on ours.
Weight We're right at or a couple of hundred pounds over on rear axle, when fully loaded. Lots of capacity left on front.
When travelling, just make sure the air bags on rear axle are inflated to 70 psi. AND tire pressure very important, max 80 psi on rears, but only 65 to 70 in front. 80 psi in front tires does lead to a handling nightmare.

In addition to checking the usually caulking an leak issues, check the side of the roof, where the fibreglass roof fits into the extrusion on top of the sidewalls. This sealant/adhesive holds the roof in place as well as waterproofing, ours started to crack after about 6yrs, I've heard of other stories where the fibreglass has popped out and sections ripped away when driving.

check the weight. With two slides that may be a problem.

X2 There will probably be very little available payload remaining. A full set of service records/history would be near the top of my list of desirable. Tires no more than 2 - 3 years old and obviously, in good condition.

The mileage sounds good if it was in fact evenly spread over the 9 years. Things work a lot longer when they have been used (maintained) on a regular basis. Any evidence of a water leak/intrusion should be a major deal killer.

Good luck and post a pic or two if you get the chance.
