YES! 75 is closed north of Knoxville. Both North and south. For a month or more! AVOID AT ALL COSTS!

We really enjoyed Mt Airy, NC and the Mayberry Campground.

We meant to spend only one night just to tell our son we had stayed at Mayberry, but ended up spending three nights. We hit all the Mayberry hot spots and Mt Pilot. Mt Airy is Andy Griffith's home.

I 75 Closure

If you wind up on I-75 north of Knoxville there is a great museum at Oak Ridge chock full of WWII era history just West of 75 and on the East side is the Museum of Appalachia. We found both worth the visit.

Try the Campfire campground, great place but make reservations early. White water rafting on the French Broad River is a blast, Blue Heron rafting is really great. Have dinner at the Moose Cafe, farm to table country cooking, not far from the Biltmore on I-26. Visit the Southern Highlands Craft Guild Museum and gallery up on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Asheville as well.

We are also in Orlando and will be heading back up to Galax Va by way of Asheville as well, but we are heading to the Panhandle first, then Stone Mountain, the Smokies and then to Asheville.

It's not on your way, but if you have any interest in military history then you have to stop in Fayetteville and Ft bragg - Fayetteville is home to the Special Operations Forces Museum, showcasing the history of our Special Ops units, and Ft Bragg has the 82nd Airborne Museum, another great stop that showcases the history of the 82nd Airborne Division.

Check out the web site for Apple Valley Farms. Don't know what you are looking for, but we enjoyed a stay there. Off the beaten path, but pretty and quite.
