What about a 2004 Winnebago Sightseer

Just looked a a 2004 Winnebago Sightseer with 17000 miles. This thing looks new but really needs a tune up. Started right up but running rough. I made an offer of $28000 contingent on running to my satisfaction after the current owner pays for a tune up. Hope I didn't make a big mistake. My deposit is fully refundable if it doesn't run to my satisfaction after the tune up. It is the 36 foot model with the Workhorse chasis. Could you all let me know the good, the bad, and the ugly on this?
  • We have a 2003 Adventurer on the Workhorse chassis. 48,000 miles. Runs great, idles smooth at 600 RPM. How old is the gas in the tank? At 17,000 miles the motorhome is still new but the gas my be pretty old. Don't know what model it is but $28,000 sounds like a good price.
  • I forgot about the noise level but some additional insulation under the dog house made a huge difference. Plenty of power to pull a toad.
  • I forgot to mention my check engine light came on in Arizona several years ago and the engine was running rough. A throttle cable switch was faulty it cost $50.00 plus tax for the repair. The mechanic at Workhorse said sometimes just unplugging the throttle cable switch and replugging it back in solves the problem. It didn't work in my case.
  • I got the 2005 Sightseer on the Workhorse chassis new about 10 years ago. We just got back from another happy trip with it.

Since I've had it, I had a power steering pump fail, an air conditioner compressor go out, and I lost the parking brake hydraulic line. The first two were covered under warranty.

I do routine service (oil, lube, etc) and have her checked over by Winnebago every 5 years. I got new tires after 8 years even though the old ones looked great. I have about 30,000 miles on it.

The workhorse engine has been great. It is noisy but I can still easily talk with my wife as we ride down the highway. I cruise at 62 mph (that is my sweet spot) when towing our CRV. Always had plenty of power, even on steep mountain roads. Yes, I slow down but I'm still passing the majority of diesel motorhomes on the mountain slopes.

Rest of the MH has been fine: slides, A/C, furnace, refrigerator, pump, water heater, plumbing, all have been good. Oh, at the 8 year factory check over at Forest City, they said they did some recaulking on the roof.....so you might want to double-check that.

Known problems would be: spark plug wires getting burnt from high engine temperature - there is a fix for that from the factory and that could cause rough running; the autopark break failure - there is a green pressure switch that seems to fail and that causes your parking brake to lock up. I just carry a spare with me if it should ever happen again. Also some models had a brake caliper recall but I was not effected by that.

We've been real happy with our 2005 Sightseer on the Workhorse.

I own the 36' gas model just above yours (Adventurer) and I've had very little trouble with mine and I bought it new in 2004. I've had 3 recalls on mine. #1. Bosch caliper recall (Brakes) #2. A fuel line clip that holds the fuel line to the frame. #3. A dashboard cluster switch. My coach listed $123,000.00 brand new and has been very dependable over the years. It has been from Washington State to Arizona, and back 5 times with no problems. Sounds like a good deal to me! All 3 recalls are free of charge to you if they haven't been fixed. Hope this helps you!
  • It's always good to have a mechanic look it over before purchasing. It could be as simple as a tuneup but then again.....maybe not.
  • Probably just needs some plug wires, was the Check Engine Light on?
  • Make sure you drive it and test the brakes. Mine took both feet to stop. Mine was a 2005 on the Workhorse chassis. Loved it other than that. Need to add a trik-l-start to keep the engine battery charged if you leave it plugged in or better yet add a small solar panel.
