Which engine do I have?

Man, so much to learn on these Class A's....thanks for the advice everyone!

3126E, Great engine. Mine has been an awesome performer. 75K and going strong. Excellent point on that fan shroud zerk, mine can only be accessed through a rear closet floor hatch. Don't let it get missed when servicing.

Caterpillar recommends the initial valve adjustment around 30,000 miles.

If a Caterpillar dealer did it, it should be recorded with Caterpillar Corp.

Call the Caterpillar RV engine hotline with your engine serial number: 877 777=3126.

Your engine serial number will be on the valve cover-- see it by raising bed or removing access door in closet.

Also, be sure to ask if you have the greasable zirk on the fan hub. Engines built before 1/03 have them and it is an often neglected service item. It can only be greased from ABOVE.

That's good to hear! Mine has 60k on it now, so hopefully it will continue to run strong!

Fire Up, I didn't get a chance go look and not sure I would have noted the color but now I will next time I'm there. He did tell me mine was a 330hp Cat as well.

Well, now you know. CATs are great engines. Yours and mine are very close to identical with some minor differences. Ours has been very faithful to us and, we've put lots of happy miles on it. Good luck.

I called Freightliner and got the engine serial number and found out it was a 3126E. They were very helpful and not rushed...I finally had to let them go but he probably would have chatted for hours! Thanks for everyone's help!

Fire Up, I didn't get a chance go look and not sure I would have noted the color but now I will next time I'm there. He did tell me mine was a 330hp Cat as well.

Just wondering, have you opened the bed or, gone into the closet or, whatever type of means there is to gain access to the engine? If so, may I ask what color that engine is? Traditionally, the CATs are yellow and the Cummins are red but, that's not a scientific analysis. And, I'd be curious for a report on what it says on top of the valve cover. Our coach is an '04 Itasca Horizon 36GD with the C-7 330HP CAT.

It is a Sept '03 production chassis and, to the best of my knowledge, has very close to one of the first C-7s. Like Brett states, if it's a CAT, it could be the earlier version, 3126 or, depending on the chassis production date, it also could be the C-7.

A look at the valve cover might reveal the whole identity. And, for your info, if it's a CAT, if you lay on your back, and look at the oil pan, where the oil pan is bolted to the block, at the drivers side, close to the bell housing, is an engine I.D. plate where the engine serial number is stamped into it. You'll have to use a mirror since that serial number faces up wards. Good luck.

Thanks! That's a great resource. One thing I don't understand is that the side of my coach (and the vin) indicate that my model number is a 4073. But this flyer (and most google searches) only turn up a 4076. It also confused the DMV when I tried to register it because their system didn't have the 4073 as an option...

I did a 5 second search and came up with several 4703

Yes, I too had found some for sale when I was researching it but that's not what I was asking...I was wondering why none of the official documentation (or website if I remember right) listed that model number...just seemed strange and made me wonder if I was getting the model number incorrect...

What does the registration say on it from the previous owner?

A few coaches that showed up on a search listed the 4073 as a special ordered floor plan. Perhaps that means that it was similar to one of the other floor plans but instead of a dining table it had a booth or instead of one couch it had two. Just compare your floor plan with the brochure and you will probably see the differences. You may have to contact the factory to get all of the exact specs that makes yours a 4073 floor plan.
