Windshield

You can, and should, carry insurance on the windshield, whether it is packaged as "standard" or an extra. Then, even if you carry a high deductible, you want to let the insurance company handle the claim, because they get a better price for you.

Last one I replaced (on an Accord) the $240 cost was within my $500 deductible, but the retail prices I had been getting for the replacement were in $600-800 range.

A motorhome windshield will be much higher cost. Risk probably depends on how much exposure. I've been on a lot of motorcoaches with broken windows lately, particularly the one piece windshields which like to grow long cracks up from chips near the bottom. But those guys are on the road all the time.

My opinion .. windshields are way too big. I think they build them that way to make them look more expensive. Can't even see the top 5 or 6 inches behind the front cabinets. Like the idea though about carrying a repair kit. We carry windshield insurance now after replacing one side. Our comprehensive insurance only covers the other windows.

the big windshield is a magnet for rocks. I average a chip every 4 thousand miles. I keep a repair kit on board to repair very quickly. I like the kit sold by Walmart in the windshield wiper area. Replaced one time, my deductible was 500$.

Nick, whenever I get a rock chip or ding in my windshield I call Novus and they come out to my house and repair it for free. My insurance company pays for it. I have Geico Insurance and, I have insurance to fix or replace my windshield when and if needed.

I have had 2 rock chips in my Class A and repaired both myself using fix a windshield from WalMart. I think the cost was about $10. There was enough repair to repair both chips, I had saved the remainder repair liquid from the 1st repair.

I used RV Glass Solutions and they arranged everything. They contacted the insurance company and called me to sett up an appointment to come to my house to replace the windshield. Two men showed up and it took them less than an hour to pull the old windshield out and replace it. That was almost three years ago and no leaks or other problems. My insurance company arranged replacement with a company. We had to take it to where they were going to do the work, not too far from home.
We had a high deductible at the time. We have since changed to a lower deductible.
I would definitely ask your insurance company about this, specifically about windshield coverage. We see now how easily they can be damaged.

I have a no deductible windshield replacement rider on my policy...no, don't recall what it cost.

In Indiana most insurance covers windshields under their "comprehensive". Several years ago I was blessed with both windshields being cracked sufficiently to require replacement (one as we traveled to Texas and one when we were almost home) and Progressive covered all but the deductable. Our local auto windshield replacers had no interest in working of motor homes so I had to go 40 miles away to get it done.

Based on several posts on this forum quite often body work is needed where the glass meet the metal. Mine only needed rust removal and repainting but some need more. That’s why our locals refuse to work on them as they never know what they’ll get into.

Recently I had a nick in one and had the local repair it as I didn't report it to my insurance as the deductable was more than the $50 it cost.
