There are several 454s in my neck of the woods for $1k or less with low mileage on them (sub 50k). 2 are even from '84-86 RVs. I'm waiting out one guy in particular hoping he'll come down on price. He listed it January 2nd and is holding out for too much $$. If too much more time goes by I'll have to just pay him what he wants and cut $$ out of the budget elsewhere.
I don't know about other models, but on my Allegro the engine has to come out the driver's door. Should be a lot of fun.
As you, I was just pointing out that 454 engines are available ranging from used to new crate engines.
