The breakfast of Marines is SOS - S*** on a Shingle aka Chipped Beef on Toast - it's the stuff of legends and the breakfast of heroes. Mess cooks will tell you it's always made with flour, butter, whole milk or diluted canned milk, and chipped or dried beef. Sometimes sautéed onion but absolutely NO OTHER VEGETABLE IS PERMITTED.
Equal amounts of flour and butter. Cook in the pan and slowly pour in the milk to make the gravy. Add the chipped beef to warm it. Serve over slightly burnt toast (the shingle).
I served in the late 50's and we ate at a mess hall that was feeding almost double capacity. Our SOS was made with ground beef and the chances of avoiding diarrhea were slim.
I like the chipped beef made at home, but I can't bring myself to make it with ground beef.
