Cicadas

Brood of 17 year Cicadas hitting most of the eastern states this year.
Ten or twelve years ago we had three different broods at onetime or overlapping.
Back then there was talk of eating the things.
Anyone have receipts or planning on eating them raw or ....

You first :) If it hasn't changed up to 5% of a hundred lb bag of flour could be anything from plant debris to grasshoppers rat poop. That would be 4.5 oz on a five pound bag of flour, I think.
Those small four and corn mills are just about all tourist sites now.
When we find one if not too expensive we buy there. Flour and every thing else is best when fresh. Some on shelves have expired dates and if still dated as expired, maybe be months old. Eat corn bread, bread or biscuits made with fresh grains and see what the receipts in the old Cookbooks taste like.

I have to chime in. I love seeing this word used this way, and it tells me a lot about you. :-)

My guess is that you're from SC or GA, likely somewhere near the coast.

  • OP, I think you should cook up a batch then bounce back and let us know how they taste. We all eat plenty of insect parts that our interspersed in our grains, flour, nuts and vegetables.
  • In the U.S., wild insects may contain high levels of insecticides (or so I understood from a PBS program about cooking with insects). But a few now and then ought to be OK.

I once found canned grasshoppers in a supermarket, and found them to be tasty. I think that they were from Japan. I hope that they were "farm raised".
  • Haven't tried cicadas but in Thailand, we've had crickets and grasshoppers.

They were fried with a little soy sauce. Really not bad other than occasionally getting a leg stuck in your teeth.

Funny thing, we came across a little old lady (who spoke no english) with a cart in an alley selling them in a non-tourist area (a lot of tourist markets sell bugs if you want to try them). At first, she acted like we shouldn't be buying them but once it was clear we wanted some, she got real happy and for 10 bhat (30c), she loaded up a big bowl for us. Far too big of a bowl. Then she added a 2inch deep fried frog on top...We ate most of the crickets and grasshoppers but couldn't bring ourselves to crunch thru the frog bones and all.

Now if you want good, a coconut grub is really good. You eat them live and the juice tastes like coconut cream.
  • Yes there are recipes for Cicadas.
I remember reading years ago about people getting sick from eating them, I don't remember the details.
