I don't know how many are familiar with this piece of iron, but it has some great qualities for RV'ers.The lid is flat on it and it has a piece to lock it on and keep it from sliding. The advantage it that it is not only a lid, but a griddle and because it is flat coals will stay on it. If you don't need for the lid to seal you can turn it over for even more coal security.With what you can do with the lid, you can basically have a DO with out legs and use it on a grill, stove or a bed of coals. It's also deep enough to deep fry in. I carry a lid rack with ours to allow me to set it over briquettes without smothering them.It's fairly inexpensive as CI goes, and cheap compared to outdoor DO's.

We have two. One stays in the mh and the other stays in the house. Love it.

Just bought one at the Lodge outlet in Sevierville last week. It it was on the "seconds" shelf and only had a couple of dimples on the bottom, not affecting the cooking surface at all. There was no way I could have left that store empty handed!

It fits perfectly in my Volcano grill. Volcano grill. Add the Volcano Lid and it's a great slow cooker or oven. In fact, I just noticed that the Volcano grill in the pic on my post ID.

I have two of them - I use them for pineapple upside down cake among other DO wonders. The lid makes it very easy to flip the cake.

We have several Lodge pieces both for the RV and house. I use the skillet most often for making Panko Salmon, a recipe from The Barefoot Contessa. One skillet, an easy recipe, makes an awesome meal.

I think doing that would be much harder, with the combo set that has the 2 short handles on the lid and pot, than the one with the single longer handles. Thanks for pointing that out. terry r.

I should also point out, if it hasn't been already, that the lid on the combo is flat. While it doesn't have a lip, briquettes can be put on it, it's just hard to keep them there if you need to look.
I've done cobbler in mine using a lid stand under and placing briquettes on top, but I know exactly how long it takes.

The longer handles are easier to use when picking up a loaded pan. We like the combo for that reason.

I love the Lodge CI. I don't have the combo exactly but due have the 4" deep smaller fry pan and standard 12 fry pan in my house. The best thing about my 12 is it was handed down to me from my father and is at least 40 yrs old and still cooking well.

I thought the 2 little handles would be harder to use with the volcano, but I didn't know if the volcano lid would cover the combo cooker that has the longer handles. I think I will probably go with the 3 qt. with the longer handles, instead of the 5 qt. with the little handles.

swtgran it might be that the combo would be better. The differences are primarily that this one has a griddle and the other a fry pan and the combo is a little more tapered. Without digging it out and measuring, I think the combo is a little deeper. I imagine that the taper accounts for the smaller capacity. The combo is listed as 10 1/4" which is a standard for Lodge. A 10 1/4" lid will fit everything form skillets to DO's and griddles, but the combo lid is slightly different than the standard and doesn't fit other items well. This might be because mine, I have 2, are old, 15> years.

The Lodge chicken fryer is a 10 1/4 X 3" deep skillet. I personally wouldn't want one bigger because my burners won't keep a larger pan heated to the edges. You can't keep moving things in from the edges when frying chicken. I do have to say I get a good seal also from the two lids I have. You might have gotten one that wasn't right.

Historically this is known as a chicken fryer. The notched lid on some early pans was intended to act as a hinge and support the top while still cooking, preventing the condensation from leaking all over your stove. If you have the larger size, they work great for frying and roasting, as well as the top works great for tortillas when you do a batch of chili.
