Memorial Day menu

Years ago I knew a lady who made Ham and Bean Soup and Rhubarb dessert every year for Memorial Day. She and her family would pay respects at the cemetery and if they happened to see someone, they got invited to the house to share the meal. Do they make people like that anymore ?
  • No special recipes for Memorial Day on my end yet had a lovely time visiting Arlington Cemetery, 'Nam Wall, Korean War Memorial (kind of eerie in a realistic manner) WW2 Monument, Lincoln and MLK Memorials this year followed by BBQ from Texas Jack's.

Oh and the Smithsonian's Air and Space museum has a great exhibit on the official American artist-soldiers of WWI, photos of some of the recently excavated quarry trenches of Picardy complete with WWI graffiti (and a pic of a full kitchen complete with pots and pans on an enormous stove discovered in a cave!) as well as a moving bronze and bio of Eugene Bullard, disputably the first Black American pilot who flew for France during the war.
  • Baby backs, potato salad, cole slaw, corn on the cob and lemon lush for dessert.
  • We celebrate with local veterans. Memorial services followed by a potluck. I'm bringing pork belly.
  • Hotdogs and Smores over the fire pit in the back yard. Not going out this week-end. Staying home in the camper all week-end.
  • The wife and I mow the cemetery for free just to make it look nice, 8 hrs well spent. The first rhubarb pie has been made and eaten by just the two of us. I would give up a lot of stuff before the fresh rhubarb.
