The "Anniversary Edition" is actually a complete, clean install of the operating system. It does not update your existing/old Win 10 but rather installs a whole new Win 10. During the new Win 10 install, your software and settings are migrated to the new Win 10. After the process, the old Win 10 is parked on your PC's hard drive in a folder called "Windows.old". Look you will find the Windows.old folder after the Win 10 Anniv. install.
