Change to wifi in motion from tv satellite

I am requesting information on the wifi in motion connections such as singlepoint wifi in motion? I now have direct tv and am not happy.

My questions are how well does the wifi receive in remote areas? Is is dependent upon local wifi or is it connected to the mystery wifi god in the sky?

If I am in Montana 150 miles from closets town will I be able to receive wifi? Does wifi rely upon cell phone service in an area?

I may have additional questions for those of you in the know. I am particularly interested in those of you with real wifi experience. It is not a cheap venture to go from sat to wifi.

Thank you

I think you're confusing WiFi with "Cellular Plan Data".
Both allow you to get Internet.

One uses your cell phone's data plan and the other uses a WiFi Hotspot.

What's confusing is that the Singlepoint stuff does both. If there's a local hotspot around (think Starbucks, McDonalds, Safeway, Lowes) then it'll allow you to connect to their HotSpot and jump on the internet.

When there's no HotSpot around (which is ****often****) then it uses one (or more) of the Cellular Plan's that you bought. You'll buy a data plan from ATT, Sprint, T-Mobile, VZ, etc.

So the answer to #1 is - it's probably NOT wifi at all! In remote areas, that are still within the range of a cell tower - you're using $$ cell plan data $$ and not WiFi.

If you're really remote - no WiFi, no cell coverage - then you're out'a internet (unless you pay $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ for satellite)

#2 - see the initial post where I think you're confusing WiFi with Cellular Data

#3 - Only if there's a Starbucks, McDonalds, Lowes, etc. nearby. Otherwise - no WiFi

#4 - See #2. No, WiFi doesn't need cellular data. But Cellular Data needs cellular data.

Judging by the entire content of this thread, I'd say you have no idea what being attacked is.

Do some of you have such mundane lives you look for a venue to express your ignorance and malcontentment?

- money (isn't it always?)
- misunderstanding what unlimited data means

- buying the most expensive package and complaining about it

I don't understand the recent rush to dump satellite and go to streaming for our RV's. We are currently 10,000 miles into our recent trip. The satellite has worked just fine in all but a few parks that were heavily treed and in some of those, we were able to use our portable dish to overcome the problem. We do have unlimited service and do some streaming via ondemand. I can state that the times we either had not internet connection or such a slow connection that streaming would be impossible was way, way more than when we did not have use of the satellite. We would be without TV much, much more if we depended on streaming. Yes you can pay less for streaming services. But you get what you pay for. You can't DVR most streaming services. Whenever the dish is blocked, we can still watch what we have on the DVR. No way will we cancel our satellite and go to streaming. If all you do is sit in one spot in a major service area, perhaps streaming is a good fit for you. If you plan to do any traveling, take a very close look at what you want and need. Chuck

Some accurate information about the DTV service would have been useful. This is not.

Our approach is to record what we want and later watch a hour program in 30 minutes. Very little live TV for us. Our one receiver with it's recordings goes with us in the MH.

Any yes there is a lot of junk on the channels regardless of the source. While we're not paying $250/mth sat TV is not cheap.

I can't comment about this specific device or service, however I can say I bought an AT&T Mobley in car wifi access point before taking a 4200 mile trip from Louisiana to Yellowstone last month making a big loop that included much of north Texas, a sliver of Oklahoma, the all the way up eastern Colorado to Nebraska, over to Rawlins Wyoming, then up to Yellowstone, back through Casper across much of Nebraska, Kansas, a the corner of Missouri and all the way town the west side of Arkansas and back to Louisiana. Nearly the whole way I was able to stream music over the Mobley from Sirius (I have a Sirius Satellite radio in my car which was back home in Louisiana, but not the motorhome and have their plan that includes streaming over the net), with just one major exception while in Yellowstone, and part of Grand Teton national parks. Sure there were a few places without service, here and there, but they were few and far between, even when on secondary highways I could go 100 miles or more without a service drop out.

I think TMO upped unlimited to 50gb before they resort to forced 480p, Big Red is 20 or 25gb before they de-prioritize you. Big Red now automatically limits all video to a maximum of 720p on all plans and devices except a handful of tablets on the top tier plans.
