Cloud Ready Printer ---- Screen Showing Avail WiFi??

Is there a cloud ready printer w/screen showing available wifi hotspots, that you can select? What's stopping me from Chromebook is the printer thing. I can honestly say that I have had 3 so-called wireless printers that I could not get to work wireless. Never had one that I could. Never claimed to be a tech genius, but if that's what is required, they have a very small market.

I don't like this idiot box thing on the printers. All they do is say"Sorry"; no explanation of the problem, etc.
  • I guess you know of what you speak, but I have noticed that I can do some things with a weak rv park wifi, but not others like google maps. I assume google maps puts quite a load on the wifi, say, less than Gmail.

Speaking of which, that is why I went to the smart phone hotspot, because I could do very little with most park wifi systems.

Also, I have noticed that a PC starting up all its support programs seems to overwhelm the weak park systems. Hopefully, a chromebook would not have to do that?
  • Demanding ?
Data use depends on what you are doing
The same work will require the same data passing over the Wi-Fi and internet
Regardless of the type of pc used

Working over the internet, is not the same thing as driving a smaller car to work to save gas,
A smaller computer does not use less data, just because it is smaller
  • I want to be able to print from a chromebook, which I guess means I need wifi direct. I use my smartphone as a hotspot when in the rv and think maybe the chromebook would be less demanding on a weak signal than a PC? We do occasionally feel the need for a hard copy.
  • There is WIFI and WIFI DIRECT. They are not the same. WIFI needs a router. WIFI DIRECT can be used directly from the computer. My HP at home has both modes. My HP in the RV is USB only. I don't want anyone else able to see it.
  • Yep, WIFI direct is what its called. I have that on the Epson that we use and works fine for PC-printer connections.

Doesn't the computer device print directly to the printer, using a direct wireless connection ??
Some do, some don't. Both my HP and Epson require a router. I think they call the other way 'WiFi Direct'

This is assuming the computer and printer are fairly close to each other.
  • See, this reply is why I shudder when I hear wireless printers. I'm sure my IT man back at work before I retired would have no problem with all this. Me, a different story.

I seriously doubt that such a product exists, though most wireless printers will show you avabial Wi-Fi Routers.. Wi-Fi "hot spots" are (or should be) designed to discourage file and printer sharing via the router.. The printer needs to be on a Local Area Net which you control at least in my expierence.

As to getting a Wireless printer to work.. Well, I suspect your problem is NOT the printer, it is the router.. If you are trying to connect both your comptuer and your printer to the park's wi-fi you can, but again, if the park has a properly configured router. it won't work

What I do.... I connect an adapter to the park, this adapter aces as a "Wi-Fi Modem" and feeds (via cat-5) my house router.. This laptop and my printer are both connected to said Router.. works great.

Now the product I use is no longer made, but I also have a 2nd Wi-Fi Re-router (TP-link) IU got for like 15 bucks, I could do it via that as well. And there are several products like Wi-Fi Ranger that are designed to "Extend" your Wi-Fi range (Enable you to connect to the park Wi-Fi from greater distances) and many of those are 2-part.. The outdoor part is an adapter much like the one I use, and the indoor one is a router, much like the one I sue only better
(Avoid Belkin Routers, that's what I have).

    Some suggestions
Make sure your LOCAL wireless network is secure (Not open)
Then you have to enter the pass-key/phrase/word into the Printer at set up

Also make sure the loacl (LAN) Ip address of the router portion is NOT 192.168.0.x or 192.168.1.x (I use 5 in the 3rd number but also recommend against it, In fact I recommend against 0,1,5,10,15,20,and any multiple of 5, use something like 12 or 27 and the odds of ever finding a park router that's 192.168.that same number.anything approach zero)

You must hard code ther IP of the printer (Same first 3, use somehing like 251 for the last digit, though in my house that is something else)

If you are in S.E. Ga, I can set it up for you.
