Delay before sound card operates.

My DT has developed a problem where the sound from a video or news clip or music cd doesn't come on when the input starts. An example is, if I start a CD, the first 10 or 20 seconds of the first song does not play thru the speakers. My DW was complaining that the caching sound that Quicken plays when you save an entry doesn't work. I went into Control Panel to adjust the sound and when I clicked on test button, nothing. If I click on the test button 5 or 6 times it starts working but by the time I get back to Quicken it has stopped working.

I cannot find anything in the sounds section of CP that would create a delay. Could there be some control I am missing or does it seem that there is something wrong with my onboard sound card.

I can easily go to Fry's and buy a new sound card if necessary.

This computer is used for email and web searches but not normally anything else. I have a separate computer that I use for recording CDs and converting vinyl to digital CDs and VHS to DVD.
  • Okay, I forgot to give much background. I have a Gateway DX4840-37, Win 7, Realtek sound and I have cold booted several times and I just checked Processes in the Task Manager and it shows "0" usage. I tried downloading the "Free" drivers from several sites including Gateway. Gateway refers me to Asus and they say driver not available. Almost all the others including Realtek take me first to Driver Detective(who says I have 18 outdated drivers) and then to anyone of several sites which for $30 will check and see if they have a upgraded driver. So much for support and free downloads.

I am going to look at the Rescue discs and see if I can find a file with the drivers.

Other than that or paying $30, what can I do?
  • I presume you have done a cold boot (complete power down then re-power up) and that you have done a Virus Scan? Those are the first two items I'd check. Next, I assume you're running some flavor of Windows as your operating system? If so, start Task Manager (right click in the launch bar) then look at Processes and see if any are taking 80% of your CPU as that could delay audio (depending upon process priorities).
  • bcsdguy, No I haven't, I'll look up Gateway's info and see about drivers. It's an onboard sound card and not a separate card.

    Thanks for the suggestion.
  • Did you try uninstalling the sound driver and reinstalling?
Or maybe look for an update to the driver?
