Just a note here. I have an HP computer here with a Seagate HD that went TU just after the 1 year warranty. It took Windows 8.1 with it.
I now run Linux Mint and won't go back to Windows.
Also this is the third Seagate HD that has crapped out on me.
I have WD HD's that are 12 years old and are still going.

I am not understanding what Windows had to do with this?

It's also interesting that the disk drive line that Hitachi bought from IBM, DeskStar, was once referred to as DeathStar due to reliability issues.

True, but "The unreliable IBM Deskstar 75GXP product became notorious as the "Deathstar" (only one of at least twenty IBM products in the Deskstar family)"

You're right that it was really only 1 model that had the issue but that didn't stop people from putting down the whole line.

I used 4 of those fans to make a solar powered crawl space ventilation system. On its third year with no issues and the crawl space is nice and dry.

Same reason it has either an Intel or Athlon CPU, some other brand of graphics card, & some other brand of DVD drive. Dell doesn't make all these components, no computer mfr does.

Intel or AMD CPU. Athlon is only one of many AMD processors.
AMD desktop processors

Same reason DELL doesn't make the motherboard, graphics card, or memory. They assemble the components based on their specs. Could be from any manufacture they contract with.

I toured the Dell plant near Austin a few years back. They don't actually build computers. They assemble them with whichever parts they get. They don't keep extra parts on hand. Everything is delivered daily for the builds computers they are working on. They have several vendors and go with the one that can get the parts to them cheapest and quickest. When my school was deployed with Dell computers, we learned that, although they were the same model units, they were assembled with different components. Just depended on when the assembly took place, and which vendor supplied the part.

Seagate would not be my first choice for hard drives. The only drives, more than one, I've ever had fail have been Seagates. I've not bought any in a long time. Western Digital or Samsung are my choices.

Seagate is a top-tier hard drive brand. Great quality. There's no reason for you to worry.

Dell uses multiple suppliers for the consumer machines. If you go to Dell.com and enter your unit number to see the software patch upgrades for your unit you can then tell based upon the drivers that are available, which drives are standard for your system.
