Not only do domes have smaller antennas they also have signal loss at the dome surface (reflection) which is made worse if there is any moisture on the dome surface. Furthermore domes are only capable of receiving channels from one satellite at a time; Dish requires the use of two satellites even for SD reception. Therefore, if you ever want to have a DVR, with a dome you can't watch one channel and record another unless they both happen to be on the same satellite. That's why so many RVers have switched to the Winegard Trav'ler; it's full size antenna can receive, at the same time, all 3 satellites needed for HD on either Dish or DireTV.
