Don't know password

What Windows version?

I don't know what Windows version
because I can't get the computer
to boot up to show me..all I can
get is a beautiful background photo
and a request for a password.

As the computer is booting, you'll (in order) get a black screen, then a blue screen with "Welcome" on the screen. At the bottom of the blue screen (at least on mine) says "Windows 7 Home Premium". Your version may vary, but that's where it is....

If the password recovery tools don't work, we may need some more info. If your computer never prompted you for a password before, it's possible that the previous problem/fix action has caused this. Knowing that may lead to a much quicker solution.

Have you tried hitting 'Enter' without putting in a password?

I recall in years past that the first time on a new computer, it would ask and if you didn't enter one, it never asked again.

All security will fall with direct physical access. Check out some videos on how fast forensic software can download everything off an iPhone when it's hooked up directly to it.

I am reading your replies. The computer was
given to me, a few years ago. After screen
warning of big trouble yesterday, my wife
was called by Microsoft (they said!) and
the talked her through many steps to cleanse
her computer....I do not know what steps, and
she also does not know....all I get now is a
beautiful screen photo (sailboats) and a
box asking for a password......I don't know
a password, and can't get past this point.
