DTV SD Receiver Question

Thanks for the info. I thought I had read at one point that on some of the newer receivers you had to change something to make them work with the Carryout but it is good to know all the new ones are P&P.

Get one that works on the legacy cabling. If it is SWM only you will have to change the RV's cabling to SWM. I have a D12-100 in my RV. It does not require SWM, although it is compatible with it.

To change the cabling to SWM, you would need a SWM8 and a Power Inserter (PI). The receiver's coax goes into the PI. The PI's coax goes into the SWM8. The SWM8's coax goes to the antenna. The PI requires a 110v outlet.

ON EDIT: you will also need to run 2 coax cables to the antenna from the SWM8 or you will only get half of the channels. Either the even or the odd transponders, but not both.

Great, now I am confused again. So basically what you are saying is if I call DTV and ask for two upgraded SD receivers I need to tell them I want the latest versions that are not SWM compatible and they need to work with legacy cabling? Sounds easy enough as long as I am not dealing with a dead head at DTV.

You need one numbered H24 or lower. H25 and up will not receive non-SWM tecnology - no menu settings.

Slight tangent - we have an HR-44 receiver, which is SWM only. Our rooftop Winegard Trav'ler is going back to the factory for repair. I'll be adding n standard 18" portable dish to use til the big dish gets back. Does the LNB have to be a dual - two cables - to the SWM8 to enable multi-tuner use on the receiver?

As expected, this question was WAY over the head of the DirecTV tech person who answered the phone. Figured I'd ask here where there are actual knowledgeable people.

Yes, the SWM8 does need two coax cables to feed it from the antenna. I forget exactly what the voltages are, maybe 13v and 18v, but don't hold me to that. The SWM8 sends 13v on one cable and 18v on the other. That puts the even numbered transponders on one cable and the odd number transponders on the other cable. That makes all of the transponders available so you can get all of your channels.

The non-SWM handles that by switching the voltage to the antenna from one voltage to the other to select the correct transponder group for whatever channel you want to watch. The SWM8 does not allow that voltage change to propagate to the antenna.

FWIW, I have an 18" round antenna on my S&B house feeding a SWM8. I don't have HD service so I don't need the 3 LNB or 5 LNB dish, but wanted SWM for single coax service to a DVR. You will probably get an error message that the receiver can't find 1 or 2 satellites. That is correct, that antenna won't see but 1 satellite. You can ignore that error message. It will work just fine.

P.S. I hate that Bill.Satellite is no longer here. I learned a lot from him.

P.P.S. I probably should have put that 2 coax requirement in my earlier post telling how to convert your rig to SWM. I just didn't think of it.

Thanks . . . I found the answer in a Winegard PDF - one cable from the LNB goes to the SWM8 101 connector, the other to the 99 connector.

Bill.Satellite is Bill Adams in real life, and he still hangs out some (and responds) at the datastormusers.com forums. Hadn't noticed he'd backed away from these forums. He's been a great resource for a lot of us.
