Did you ever wonder what happened to Windows 3??
Well, it cost a lot and didn't work, so they gave away Win 3.1.
Matt
Windows 3.1 was essentially a bug fix for 3.0. They claimed it was an upgrade. Just about all of the "upgrades" were coded in 3.0 but disabled as they could not make them work in time for release.
Anyone remember DESQview? - qtla9111NomadSo, what happened to Windows 9?
"It came and it went," said new Microsoft Windows marketing boss Tony Prophet on Monday on stage at the Dreamforce conference in San Francisco. He was quoting Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella who has been answering that question much the same way.
Microsoft doesn't want people to associate the next version of Windows with the unpopular Windows 8.
"Windows 10 is not going to be an incremental step from Window 8.1," he explained. "Windows 10 is going to be a material step. We're trying to create one platform, one eco-system that unites as many of the devices from the small embedded Internet of Things, through tablets, through phones, through PCs and, ultimately, into the Xbox." - FizzExplorer

This is kind of like what happened with Win 9. The beta was so terrible that they are hoping to keep people from going to Linux by giving away Win 10.

Nonsense.
There never was a Win 9. That number was simply skipped. - 8_1_VanExplorerMy first version of Windows was Windows 386 2.1 in the late 80's. I sold it this past year on Ebay.

Wasn't till Win 3.1 before it really caught on, 1992, feels like only yesterday.
Yes, there was nothing quite like the "thrill" of loading a new version of Windows 3.x from ~10 floppy disks wondering if it would be successful or if you would have to start all over again.
And what about the sick to your stomach feeling you would get from seeing the Blue Screen of Death on your monitor; no horror movie comes close to that feeling! :B
What fond memories we have of our early Windows adventures! - Matt_ColieExplorer IIDid you ever wonder what happened to Windows 3??

I never physically assaulted a computer prior to Windows.
Matt - FizzExplorerI remember that.
Cute but it will never catch on :)

To me, in 1985, computers were partly science fiction and something the government and business used.
I wonder what we will have 30 years from now?
Maybe Skynet will be in charge. :)
