Hopper/Joey for Home and RV

I have been with Direct for years, but as I looked for RV options it seems that Dish is a better choice with HD antenna options that are clearly easier to deal with. We only use RV weekends and vacations, and the monthly pay as you go would be a waste of money for two days or so of a month. I am looking at going HOME/RV on Dish, but have some questions that those of you with DISH probably can answer.

With Direct, I take one of the receivers along when we go out to the lake or whatever. Is this possible with a Hopper/Joey setup? Do you take a Hopper/Joey combo box?

And, if you have two hoppers (I have five home TVs)are Joeys tied to a specific Hopper box or can you mix and match when going out on the road?

Thanks.
  • I'm sure its RG6, but don't know about 3 Ghz?? It's whatever the factory put in.

Make sure that you use 3 GHz RG6 coax between the Solo Node and the Hopper.
  • I want to try and do the same thing, if Dish will ever call me back to approve 7 TVs. I want to keep 1 hopper and 3 Joeys active at the house all the time, and transfer an additional hopper and 2 Joeys between the house and camper seasonally. I have the same questions as the OP.

Yes, you can take a home Hopper(s)/Joey(s) in your RV.

I have a permanent Hopper, 2 Joey setup in my RV since I no longer have a S&B.

Joeys can be "linked" or "unlinked" to any Hopper on your network by using a Joey's online menu system. (Just a side note -- Hopper/Joey networks can be created where everything sees everything else or where they cannot.)

BTW, if you can afford it, buy multiple Hoppers instead of Hopper/Joey combos because you end up with more tuners. Initial pop for Hopper is more than a Joey, but lease fees are the same.

Here's a link to a set a Hopper/Joey RV network diagrams I created that might be of interest.
  • Be aware that you will not be able to use any kind of dome/portable automatic antenna with a Hopper. You will need either a Winegard Trav'ler or a standard Dish 1000 antenna mounted on a tripod that you must point yourself manually.
The Hopper and Joey are 2 completely separate devices and the Joey's are not satellite receivers. At a minimum you will have to bring a Hopper (and find room for that big box) and if you want to watch anything on the Hopper on a different TV you will have to run new coax to that location and install the Joey.
I am not sure when you disconnect a Hopper on a Duo Node Splitter and use that with a Solo Node in an RV but, in theory, it should work unless you separate the Hopper/Joey setup in the house where not all Joey's can access both Hoppers.
  • I like the hooper due to the fact it is hidden in my trailer the joey is behind my upstairs tv so nothing is showing
