The latest version of Firefox has put Search Settings in the Options Menu as its own category. Just go to Options, then click on Search on the menu. The top selection is for the default search engine that you want to use - click on the drop down menu and select Google (or whatever you want). Then go below and uncheck every other search engine. This section below is the "new" feature in Firefox to search all search engines and report results from all - all those checked will be searched. Just uncheck everything. The default will be as set on the top of that menu - such as Google.
As to home page - set your homepage on the same Options menu under General. Once you put it in, make sure it is set. This was straightforward on my Win 7 computer - on my Win 8.1 laptop I had to reset the home page several times on Firefox (and IE) to get it to stick - but now all works as I want it to - Google is the default search engine and my home page is what I want it to be.
