How to make laptop more stable?

Posted earlier question about keeping tabs on house temps while away. Downloaded logmein as suggested. However, during the night the laptop running logmein hungup. Logmein was still functioning on the client and seeing host desktop, but the laptop was not happy.

Laptop is an 4-5 year old Dell Inspiron running XP. Windows is up to date. Have turned off auto updates, modified power settings and cleaned out unnecessary programs running at startup. Any suggestions for increasing the stability of the laptop?
  • I would second LittleBill's recommendation of Ultra VNC.

I am not convince by the above that it is solely Logmein at fault. What shape is your laptop in? Is this the first time it seems unstable? Need more info on what unstable means. If you let the laptop run all night without logmein running, will it reboot itself (crash)? As someone said above, some older laptops may need extra air flow and/or physical cleaning. Some parts cause a hardware fault, which can freeze a computer, when they are loose or over heat.

IMHO, Linux is the Way to go. I use Zorin Linux which can be set to resemble either Windows7 or XP.
  • log me in is web based, not the most stable for long term use. look into a program called ultra vnc
  • You indicate that you think it is the OS that is causing the problem. What about the program that is running?
XP is different in some ways from Win7. Is the version of Logmein for Win7 instead of XP?
Have you search for problems with Logmein and XP and also visited their forum and FAQ for issues?
Some programs do not release memory as they should and can cause problems that will crash system that is left on for a long time.
  • Do you have your computer set to 'sleep' after a given period of time? Sleep settings will essentially shut down the computer and some screen savers will also do the job.

I do pretty well with my older DELL M90 Workstation setup running XP PRO.

I guess this coming year MS will stop sending out updates for the XP system so will probably have to update my operating system. I am going to go for just Windows 7..

My setup on the road is almost 99% the same as it is at home. I use the same M90 laptop sitting in a DELL DOCKING station with external monitors, keyboard, sound, external I/O items. I just grab the M90 LAPTOP from the house and move it to the trailer and drop it into the DELL Docking station. I also have several USB hard drives with all my special projects data stored like photos and my two-way emergency radio OPS I like to do...

We use VERIZON MIFI for internet connections across the country. Right now I get away with a 3GB DATAPLAN but will probably go for the MILLENICOM MIFI based setup 20GB dataplan setup in the near future.

We use the NATL BROADCAST system for TV using the BATWING antenna and occasionally downstream a missed HDTV program using free 'WATCH TV-SERIES' internet TV program. Used to bring along the SAT TV stuff from the house but the quality of the NATL BROADCAST free to public system turned out so good for us we stopped bringing along the SAT items.

I got my M90 DELL workhorse laptops from off-lease sales on the internet. You can get the same today with the DELL M6000 series from off-lease places for $600-$800 if you look around. I got two top end DELL M90s at the time and they came fully loaded with software ready to go. Both still had DELL WARRANTY left on them... This is what we used in my working years so had alot of experience of living with the same DELL M90 machines on the road...

Kinda neat to see my dual 24-inch computer setup in my off-road POPUP trailer... I have it all setup on a 3/4-inch plyboard laying in the unused tent bed end where our wrap around seating is. Worked out good for us... I can also use the tabletop shown here as well for my computer ops..

  • Will this be the only use for this laptop in the future? If so, I would recommend a thorough physical cleaning (getting rid of all the dust around the vents/fans), get a chill pad to set it on, then format and reload with just the necessary programs.
