Import Favorites from Windows Vista to Windows 8.1

Hope someone can walk me thru this. I've tried doing a search but
can't seem to find anything on this.

I want to get my old computer's Vista favorites to my new computer windows 8.1.

I found a site that tells me how to make a txt file and then
call up each site in the new computer and then save it.

I'd sure like to just copy the file and replace the one in the new
computer.

Thanks,

  • What browser are you using? It's easy to export Favorites/Bookmarks to a thumb drive which you can then use to transfer to the new computer.

With IE you can go to File, Import and Export.

With Firefox you can click on Bookmarks, Show all Bookmarks, and then Import and Backup.

    Dunno about Chrome.
  • Chrome, if you have a Gmail account you don't have to do anything, they will be there as soon as you sign in.
  • What is a "Vista favorite?". I was unaware that the Vista version of windows had a favorites place.

Sometimes you just gotta read between the lines. :)
  • Windows vista is the operating system. Favorites is internet explorer.
IE9-11 run on windows vista. it is where you store your favorite web page/ blog/
    internet site.
So it's two items operating system Vista.. favorites internet site storage area.

If you are talking about "Favorites" in your browser.. There is a browser "Extension" Called X-Marks.. You obtain it for all versions (it is free) and extablish an X-Marks accounts.

Then you take the VISTA computer and set it so that "Computer overrides web" and the Vista bookmaks, Including any folders and such, are sent to an off-site server, then you fire up the new 8.1 box and when it comes to the SYNC operation WEB overrites computer.

    Job done.

Also from then on they will STAY in sync, and if you get another computer .. Yup, you guessed it.
  • Do like I suggested, easiest way to do it. Takes about 2 minutes.

I do have to admit Ryder your method is simple.

Mine has the advantage of syncing bookmarks across several computers.. My DELL netbook, My HP desktop my new Toshiba notebook, If I ever get my R-31 or R-52 (Leveno/IBM) back on line they will also have the same bookmarks,, If this computer gets run over by a truck, and I get a replacement.. IT will have the same bookmarks.. I really like X-Marks.

The only problem is you have to remember your password to log in when you get a new computer.. (Not really that much of a problem)

In fact.. If I wished I could add my droids to the list and import the bookmarks there as well (Well Sync) however I have a different probram on all 3 that lets me store a bookmarks file "Off site" and access it from any browser on any computer anywhere. Including my Droids. Not that is super handy. But I'm not going to recommend that one because it does not do what the O/P wants.
  • Without a doubt your way is an excellent method. I may do it myself since I do use several computers and making sure I have my Bookmarks on them all can be a bit of a pain. I was just trying to keep it as straightforward as possible for a poster who may be slightly lacking in computer skills.
