iPad mini retina

I am about to buy an iPad Mini retina for traveling for both planning itinerary and on the road when we deviate from the "plan". I am a long time Mac user and have had an iPhone for a year.
What I want to do is reduce the books and maps we take on our trip (8.5' pop up TC). I love the iPhone apps but the screen is a bit small for doing maps or reading about destinations.

I know you can download Amazon Kindle eBooks with a Kindle app and there are books available from iTunes. Benchmark atlas has California, Oregon and New Mexico apps and 3 of my fave photography book series (Laurent Martres series) are available on Amazon. I also have a ton of pdfs and other documents plus images of places to explore stored on my Mac laptop. I am not sure how to move this info from my laptop to the iPad mini. There is no USB port. I may have to get on the iCloud?

I think this would be ideal for on the road and we can leave some the books/maps behind. Also, I can preview my images in the field from my camera, I think but don't know how yet. What do you think? Could you tell me your experiences? I am planning to get the 64gb unit with WiFi and 4gb LTE version. I am with Verizon and have an iPhone5. I think it will cost $10 more a month.

Thank-you for your ideas and feedback
