Nook vs Kindle

My granddaughter got a Nook for Christmas last year and has left it at our house because she could not use it. My wife got a Kindle for her birthday back in June and has not put it down. I set up my wife's kindle so I assumed I could get the NOOK to where my granddaughter could read books as she is an avid reader on her phone. I put some books on my Galaxy tablet and she reads them furiously. Now had I known last christmas all the things I know now about the Nook I would have had her return it ......... at 25 percent charged it takes 6 hours of charge time just to get to 50% it you have it on it will not recharge it must be turned off......also if you want to download free books you must enter a valid credit card number......what is up with that? Even BN does not know why. I tried to download apps and I found I get older waiting for them to down load then have no idea where they went as they do not appear in the apps folder......In other words the Nook does not live up to all the hype.......My granddaughter is tech savvy as I have to ask her questions on a regular basis and for her to give up on this tells me it is a piece of junk......

After 1.5 years still have the original Kindle. Amazon loves me as I'm DLing books just about every week. Wife has an IPad with the Kindle app so she can share books that I've already DL'd. when the grand kids are over they use the IPad for games.

I've had my Nook for about 2 years and really like it. Regarding the credit card comment and free books - Have you joined your county/city library system ? I download books all the time from my county library (Volusia)for free - no credit card required. I probably average reading one book every week. I would go broke if I were buying books every week.

* My pet peeve - I would really like to see every city/county/state/college ebook library system joined together to become one large U.S. library so everything would be available. I would pay any appropriate yearly fee to belong ! Right now I'm at the mercy of my county library and can only get at the ebooks they choose to have available. My fallback position is that each state would pull together everything within their boundaries and form a state library system.

One of the reasons mentioned that I like the Nooks is that they will dual boot first to the SD Card. This allows one to use third party ROMs to upgrade to full versions of Android.

You can download for Free a Jellybean image file, and create your own SD Card upgrade. So don't have to buy one from a service that is basically just downloading an open source Android ROM from one of the developers, and charging for it.

BTW, the stock B&N Nook HD+ runs Android 4.0 and allows one to install the Kindle app from Google Play. Not necessary to upgrade the ROM first to do so. Don't know if the Kindle allows installing the B&N Nook app at all?

Have Nook simple touch, great reader quick charge and last a long time. Also have a Nook color, it has to be charged on a special charger that comes with it. For reading I prefer the simple touch. A few seconds to down load a book. DW is reading a book that was 99 cents from BN.

The wife has a Nook Color. She's not a computer person. It's not that she is slow on a computer, she has never gotten on a computer - ever. Sit her at a computer and her eyes glaze over and she doesn't know what to do with it. I set up her Nook when she first got it and she doesn't have a problem at all Dling books or whatever she wants to do on it. I've used it some. No problems at all like the OP described.

They are different animals, and you really can't compare them, even if you think you can.

Do you have the kindle app on your nexus? I had a kindle fire and when it died I replaced it with a nexus 7 and can read all my books from amazon . I don't think I can tell the deference as far as the reading app. I like the fact that it share's all the apps with all my android device's and it makes a sweet GPS.

I have a Kindle Keyboard, a Nook HD, a Nexus 7, and an iPad among other things.

The N7 is what I end up using the most for tablets.

N2A Chip

Pretty much eliminated all the problems caused by B & N programming.
Load on Nook, Kindle and Overdrive software and your good to go.

Thanks Dave, I went there and looked at what it does and bought the chip. My granddaughter who owns the nook was excited when she saw its capabilities. Now just have to wait for it to come snail mail......

I have both Nook and Kindle on my laptop. I like the way nook operates a little better. I read a lot, sometimes I buy a book that I have already read. Returning, after reading a few pages, like within five minutes, is almost impossible with B&N. Returning to Amazon is a piece of cake. I don't use Nook any more.

I still have the original Kindle, no add-ons, no repairs ... so can only say how well it's worked for me over several years. Perfect.

Have no intention of upgrading it, or doing anything different until it fails - if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Seems to me, the 'improved' versions always come out, and break sooner. Once the original name is established, the quality goes in the tank. I had a Sprint original cell for about seven years - finally, the current techology got too 'advanced' and it wouldn't take calls any more.

Took it in and the store tech says, "I've never seen a phone that old." - Since then, about another six years with Sprint, have replaced five phones. Get one, it breaks, get a replacement, it breaks - each one lasts less than two years - conveniently, just in time for a new contract and a new phone ... go figure!!

I've also not experienced anything close to what you've described. You may have some type of hardware issue? In fact, I believe the Nook is one of the best tablets available at its price point. I have the Nook HD+ w/Android 4.0, 8.9" with 1920x1280 HD display, 1.5G dual-core Risc, and have seen these as low as $130. Bought a leather rotatable tablet case and stand for just $12. Also has Bluetooth, so use my Nook with a separate portable wireless keyboard above.

My Nook charges fairly fast with its included charger. And only need to recharge every 5-7 days when using it primarily as a reader, web surfing, and email.

Comes with Chrome browser, and have not had any issues downloading apps from Google Play. Fast downloads and installs. Even have the Kindle App installed, though haven't yet used it. So confused at all the issues you're experiencing?
