Tiffin is doing that with DirecTV. It makes no sense for them and it would make no sense for FR. It's just silly to try to tell the future owner of a coach that they need to use one service or the other (or even suggest it). DirecTV has about 30 million customers. Does FR really think that alienating these folks is a good idea? DirecTV has (about 3/5 of the market and Dish 2/5) trying to figure out who should do what is going to be a bad choice about 1/2 the time!
It does make sense economic sense for them in that they can offer a relatively inexpensive domed dish and state that they have built in HD Dish Network capability. Getting HD with DirecTV requires a Winegard Trav'ler since no dome system can receive the Ka and Ku band signals required for DirecTV HD.
If Tiffin is pre-installing DirecTV equipment I wouldn't be surprised if they are also installing a domed systems because they are cheap and the companies that make them probably can't find a lot of DirecTV customers who are willing to live without HD these days, so they probably get a good deal. I've learned from reading these forums that Entegra is doing basically the same thing, installing a cheap dome system and letting you pay to upgrade to a Trav'ler. From what others have posted the cost to upgrade to the Trav'ler is pretty close to its retail cost so the customer is getting little to no credit for the "obsolete" domed OEM system.
What the customer is not being told is that even with Dish Network the domed systems being installed are virtually useless with a DVR if your interest is being able to watch one channel and record another since it can do that only if the two channels happen to be broadcast from the same satellite.
It's another example of an RV manufacturer installing inferior appliances, electronics, etc, while, at the same time, advertising how they provide all these cool features as standard equipment.
