Photoshop or Photoshop Elements 13

Not sure where to start.... Should I get Photoshop to start with or should I get Photoshop Elements 13 to start?

Do I have to have 1 in order to get the other?

I use Photoshop a lot....but you might want to take a look at GIMP.
It's full featured, does most everything you are posting that you want to do, and it's FREE.

You can still get it from Adobe, but they have made it VERY VERY VERY VERY difficult to find:

Haven't been able to find Adobe CS6 suite license to end users on their site, despite Adobe reps claiming they would continue to provide them?

Adobe discontinued volume licenses for CS6 last year. I believe we were paying a one time $250. per license for CS6 Design/Production suites. Now paying $500. a "year" per license for the enterprise version. And had to buy a substantial number of licenses to get that price.

Sometimes I have just plain old lucked out reading this site. I was going to Google "Adobe Elements" reviews just to find out what it is. My DD and SIL gave the software to me and I didn't really know what it was, now I get the "Elements" part of the name.

I want to take pictures of the DGKs, remove the background, merge the two pictures and have a perf sign made to put in the entry window like CA has in the rentals.

Didn't want to learn a new program but I'm told that I need to exercise my mind as well as my body so here goes some more mental exercise.

If you want Photoshop and Lightroom you could get it for $9.99 a month from Adobe .

Wow lots of information thanks.....

To be honest all I really want is the ability to burn some DVD's with all the past digital pictures I have taken over the last 10yrs+....

Maybe do some fancy frames and fading in and out along with music, and yes eventually do some pictures enhancing.....

I know there is MS Movie Maker and it works fine but I want something more and maybe find a Forum that supports Photo Shop and learn how it works......

Looking at prices, Photoshop CS6 can still be purchased at $699 from Adobe. No new versions will be available for straight purchase.

I agree with those comments about the subscription downsides. However, I have elements 10 on disc (and on the laptop) so I can always go back to it.

However, some considerations:

1. You only have to connect to the internet once every 4 months to verify your subscription. You do NOT have to connect every time you want to use photoshop;

2. At $600+ for the full photoshop (and assuming you will upgrade every 5 years), you are paying $120+ per year; for the photography subscription you get full photoshop and lightroom (about $80) for $119.88 per year. And it's getting very hard to find full photoshop in disc form.

I agree that in a business setting, it can be a huge deal. But for the casual user, small business user, etc., it can be a better option. And if you don't need the 16bit, there isn't much that elements can't do at a much lower price.

I had PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS 9 on my XP DELL M90 laptop machine which I stopped using when MS stopped supporting it. Just recently bought a great 17" DELL LAPTOP from a QVC purchase using WIN 8 and the latest Intel CORE i7. This thing screams...

It came with several software items including PHOTOSHOP Elements 13... The only subscription software was OFFICE 365 which I didn't take. My older MS OFFICE 2007 loaded up just fine which I am using now.

QVC saved me big time with their great LAPTOPS and the 6 months easy payments with zero interest.

PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS 13 had changed so much since Elements 9 and a two year gap in using it I had to learn it all over again haha... It all starts coming back pretty easy...

I would buy the Elements CD ... I'm a photo guy by profession, and have always used Elements versions. Does everything I need ...

But, to be fair, I only shoot 'real life' projects, and do not need nor use the tricks and options that some advertising or technology projects use. So, my needs are pretty basic compared to some folks that need all photo bells and whistles.

Personally, I shy away from subscriptions for the very reason :: IF you stop the subscription, you don't even have an OLD version. Monkey's 2 cents.

Just note that Adobe's new cloud arrangement for their products, is not really cloud app based. You still need to install the applications locally. It just doesn't use a local key authentication, but requires net access to continually authenticate. A way to get a constant income stream from you. If you stop their subscription, you no longer have use of your locally installed applications.

Cloud subscription authentication has caused problems in enterprise environments. Not able to get past corporate firewalls. In fact, we purchased Adobe enterprise versions which will authenticate on a local machine, just like CS6 did, so no need to do so from the net. But had to purchase 100+ licenses, many of which going unused so far.

Which is one reason we hold on to Adobe CS6 Design/Production suite licenses on our current machines as if they were gold.

when I bought elements, some tasks were easier than with PS. removing red eye as one example, IIRC. $80 vs $300????????

Depends on what you're wanting to do. For most people, even many professionals, elements will do everything they could possibly want to do - and at around $100, it won't break the bank. The full photoshop will allow you to edit in 16bit color - so if you're doing major detailed work the majority of the time, then it may be the best bet.

One option to consider: Adobe has a subscription based deal that makes the full photoshop much more affordable. For $9.99 per month, you can get full Photoshop and Lightroom. When they upgrade the programs, you automatically get those upgrades at no extra cost.

I'm not usually fond of subscription services, but after having dealt with the hassles of upgrading software: I had photoshop 4, upgraded to CS as was allowed at the time; several years later, my computer crashed and I had to reload the CS. It wouldn't let me because I didn't have the 4 disc anymore. Calling the service desk did no good because all they could do is tell me 4 was more than three versions back from CS, so the upgrade wasn't allowed - except that when I bought the CS upgrade, it WAS allowed). They also had me identified with version 3 not 4, so I had to fight that. END OF STORY: I now do the subscription and don't worry about any of it anymore. 🙂
