Printer Advice

Just replaced my old MacPro with a new 15" MacPro. Now, my very old Canon printer is not working so well with the new Mac. Actually, it was on it's last leg. Anyway, I want to buy a new Mac friendly printer that does really good photo and graphics printing and good black and white docs. I've looked at a lot of online reviews at Apple and other sources. What I'm looking for is some fresh hands on personal experience from someone who has recently purchased a printer for a Mac. Any advice appreciated.
  • HP has been the best at providing printer drivers for Mac computers. I stopped using inkjet printers as they are too expensive overall. I use a HP Laserjet Pro 200 color printer for the black and white and color printing. For "pictures" I use the HP brochure paper. For a picture that is going to be framed I send the file to either Costco for printing (takes one hour to have it available to pickup and you can designate which store) or with larger prints than 11x14 I use WHCC.com. WHCC will also mat the prints which protects them for shipment and makes it easy to take them to a framing store or to frame them myself.

Inkjets need to be used frequently or the ink in the head nozzles dries up and then it is time to buy a new cartridge even though a lot of ink remains in the one with the bad nozzles. It costs me $1.00 for each piece of HP or Epson inkjet photo paper and for that same $1.00 I can get a photo print made at Costco that is going to last longer.

No costly ink and no printer needed and no restrictions on how big a print I can make. With WHCC I can upload a file on Sunday and on Monday it ships out to me or can be drop shipped to anywhere in the world. It makes my life a lot simpler.
  • I had the same problem when I upgraded my MacBook earlier this year. I called Canon to see if there was a new driver I could install, but the printer I had was no longer supported with upgrades. Canon did give me a substantial discount on a new printer, plus free shipping. Might be worth a call to Canon.

Check out the Epson Workforce line of printers. Great quality and printing. Inexpensive ink cartridges. I use the 4 ink printer. Ink lasts longer and you only replace the color that runs out, saving ink.

  • I use an Office Jet 100 from HP. bluetooth or usb connect. works great, also has battery pack to allow connection without 110 plugin.
  • I carry an HP laser printer in my motorhome.

I was always afraid of an inkjet leaking ink.

  • I have the wireless HP Envy printer for my Macbook Pro and idevices. I like it because it doesn't look like a printer, LOL.
  • Have one of the all everything wireless HP printers for home. But since we have moved into the fiver we bought a Canon 100 compact printer for printing documents. It does a good job for a pretty reasonable price. We use a older HP toaster printer for pictures and that also does great.
