TV without satellite

Awhile back with your help we determined that my antenna was replaced with a satellite dish, so we don't get any TV as we don't have a satellite plan & don't travel enough to merit one. Now with that said, is there any way to get TV with out removing the dish on the rooftop & replacing with an OTA antenna? We don't watch a lot of TV when camping but do enjoy it some. Suggestions appreciated.
  • Seems your best bet would be to replace the dish with a Winegard Batwing. Having said that, you can use pretty much anything for a TV antenna, ie: rabbit ears, newer flat versions of antennas, a coat hanger, etc. Of couse all these will work in relation to your distance from the transmitter of the channel you want to view, and a lot of "fiddling" with the antenna to get the best reception.

Mounting a CRANK-UP antenna on my OFF-ROAD POPUP was not an option.

I elected to mount a rotatable PVC POLE up the side of the POPUP and mounted the BATWING ANTENNA on that. I can reach out the zip-up window flap and rotate the PVC pole.

We get 6-36 FULL BLOWN HIGH DEF HDTV digital signals just about everywhere we go here on the East part of the US.

We even use the BATWING OTA Antenna when camping at Electric sites with CABLE TV. The BROADCAST NETWORK is transmitting digital HDTV signals from the local towns available to the public for FREE... Most camp grounds are still sending ANALOG CABLE TV SIGNALS to the TV pedestal ports. Much better to watch DIGITAL HDTV...

  • If you don't want to replace the antenna on your roof, just get one of these and plug it in the back of your television. You can always stick it out the window too.

Wall Mart, Best Buy, any electronics store sells them, actually, you can find them pretty much anywhere now. There was the As-Seen-On-TV ad that sold them too. We have 4 of these in the house, since we have DISH satellite, and just flip the "input" on the television when we want to watch over-the-air. They work pretty good. But also found each television works different on the same antenna. It's like the newer the television, the better they work (pull in more stations), for the same antenna.

Well as it turns out there are many ways to get TV that do not involve replacing the Batwing. Some might even be better than batwing (But a lot more work)

You can still buy good old fashion TV antennas designed for outdoor tower mounting, In fact I think Wiegard makes one or two or twenty.

These antennas can be mounted on top of a Telescoping Flag Pole...

The flag pole site also sells a 12 volt operated rotor.

The problem with these antennas is they are BIG, you need to fold them back up for transport.. I have done this with House type antennas but it's not an easy job.
  • Ok, another question... If we remove the satellite dish & replace it with a batwing, would we have to redo any of the wiring? If so, how fo you do that?

Or you can just watch tv on your computer. That's what I do.

Hadn't thought of that. Maybe the simplest solution but still would like to know about wiring if we decide to replace the dish.
  • Do not remove your sat dish, you may not need it but the next buyer will.

Buy a bat-wing, install it next to your sat dish and have both. Unplug the sat dish cable at the dish and plug the cable into the bat-wing, simple.

I have both, it's good to have options.
  • just keep in mind you will still need the booster. It should still be in your RV but they may have disconnected the wire to it for the dish.

I have bought the 20 to 60 dollar OTA antenna's for residential TV's and have found you need to

buy the one that is clearly marked on the box that it is "Amplified".

Walmart has a good selection to choose from that do work. Expect to pay around 60+ for the amplified ones.

Those that are not amplified don't do squat for pulling in channels. Henceforth why our RV's have the booster switch for the batwing.

Posted it before but I am in my new winter home and I ran a cable from my MH antenna parked alongside the house to the TV inside the house and get a PLETHORA of channels for free! :C

I would definitely take the dish down and put the batwing back up. Best antenna for ota free channels.
  • Camping world sells a antenna that will stick to your windows or anywhere. It is flat and very light like a sheet of paper. It plugs into the back of your TV and works great, its a HD antenna and gets more channles than you would think. It sells for around $37.00
