Typical Data Usage

10 gig ok as long as you don't video stream anything!

We use a 10 gig plan with 3 phones and 2 tablets and never go over. Usually stay around 7-8 gigs per month. Where we live no internet is available except by cell or satellite.

Just as a data point. When we camped for a week, my wife watched netflix to stream her shows/movies a fair amount. She was using about 1.5G per day.

I agree with these folks. If your not streaming movies/videos very much, then 10Gig should be fine.

Regarding this statement, are you using your cell phone for internet access at home? This is something we were thinking about too as we don't know where we'll eventually end up. Thanks.

We had 10 GB for years.

Last year I bumped up to 15 GB.

We now use right at 15 GB.

I think you use what you have.

We live rural and don't have internet at home or on the road. ATT & Verizon both have an internet module. Either plug it into USB port or for lap top just set it nearby. Both have password entry where you can create good security. I use about 12 character entry. The only difference is coverage area. We have both. ATT is called "Sierra". Verizon is called "Jet Pack" You can connect 2 computers. ATT rolls over what you don't use. In our area either works well. Both charge by USB port or wall plug using USB port. Out of our immediate area Verizon seems to have better coverage. However, ATT seems to have better PR. I have stock in both. Both are good companies paying 5% dividends on their stock. If you use Verizon I would go with the "Jet Pack" JMHO.

Yes, we use the cell phones as hot spots to use our laptop and everything else is done on tablets. We use Redbox rentals for movies so no data is burned watching movies.

Had Hughesnet years ago but if the wind blew you would lose connection and data restriction was rediculous. We also paid close to $200 a monh for that service. Verizon has been great for us just relearn to not use high data applications and you shouldn't have an issue. Oh, I have two teenagers who also use our service and still never have exceed 10 gig.

I know with the new verizon plans overages aren't as costly as they used to be. They basically charge you a fee for XX gb of data instead of the insane amounts they used to charge.

That said, have you looked into www.exede.com? They offer 10 gb per month for $50. Plus they have hibernation options that only cost $10/month if you won't be using it. And they don't charge data usage from 12 am to 5 am.

It is satellite though, so your limited to being able to see the sky with their dish. And I am unsure if they have issue with making their dish essentially "mobile" if your moving place to place all the time. I'm sure you could figure that out if you call them though.

Just thinking it might be an option if you cut your verizon plan down and take the money saved from that to use towards the exede stuff.

They claim like 12 mbps download speed or something like that. Can't honestly say if that would be "slow as hell" in comparison to your phone hotspot or not.

When we were doing regular RVing (had a home to return to) we maintained a 6 gig plan and it worked out OK. We upped it to 10 gigs now but don't have enough experience to know if that's enough.

From my experience going from part- to full-time RVing, I think you'll find full-time requirements greater than part time, but you can always UP your limit.

You can setup an automatic warning when Verizon thinks you might go over your limit.

If so, you can increase your limit for the current month to avoid the overage charge.

When you do so, be sure and reduce your limit for the next month. If you don't you can't cut it back until the following month - which would charge you more for that next month even if you don't hit over your planned limit.

But if you keep cutting it down next month, and only increasing it during a month when you are in danger of overshooting your limit, you will keep your data costs down as much as you can.
