Verizon Unlimited

In the past my wife has upgraded her phone via my upgrade as she has an unlimited grandfather plan. I use a flip phone with no data plan. I would then take her old phone by switching numbers via our computer and use it for a month or so (paying the data plan rate)...then after a month or so I would go back to my old flip phone and since it wasn't a smart phone, they would not charge me for a data plan.
A Costco rep says that Verizon has done away with that capability...anyone know for sure?
thanks
  • Oh you want to upgrade your phone get the low use data plan
Then switch phones giving her the new phone

Then after a month of use go back to your old flip phone

Truthfully IDK if that works anymore, the reason to sell a smart phone at a upgrade discount is to get you on a data plan spending more money every month

I think you might find your line stuck with the data plan, or the phone deactivated when it goes on your wife's line

The place to look for info will be on HoFo aka Howardsforums.com
The are the number one phone info forums

i'm not sure what you are asking

IF asking about the wife upgrading and keeping her Unlimited plan
    the answer is NO

if asking about temporarily switching to and using an old smart phone on your line and then switching back
    that should still work

For the last several years my wife with her unlimited data plan has been on a month to month. Each time she needs (or thinks she does) a new phone I would use my upgrade and get the phone she wanted, but then I would have a data plan of 2gb...when we would get home, I would take her old smart phone and the new one under my number and switch them via computer...so now I would have the old smart phone and she would have the new one...after about a month I determined I really didn't need or use a smart phone do I switched the old smart phone of hers that I was using back to my flip phone and the data plan went away. It is now time (in her mind to upgrade again)...hence the question.

  • We have the unlimited plan and have twice paid full price for a new I phone and kept the plan. Last time was 2 weeks ago.
  • Just bought a new phone three weeks ago right from Verizon and had the phone number transferred to the new phone. Had the new phone activated using a Verizon rep at their customer service center to make sure the switch worked OK. Bought the new phone from Verizon Refurbished Outlet online, saved $200.00. The phone is brand new.
  • As mentioned, it sort of works. Your flip phone upgrade to a smartphone is first. Transfer the first phone to her unlimited account. The previous flip phone account needs to maintain a permanent data plan.
  • I recently went through upgrading 2 smart phones.........

It is true that you can no longer use the upgrade of a NON-smart phone to receive a subsidized smart phone.....you would have to upgrade to a data plan on your flip phone under contract...typically 2 years......$30 x 24 = $720

So, yes the Costco rep is correct......

What I did was.....like sch911 describes.....I bought 2 smart phones on Craigslist.......one was brand new never activated and the other was an assurance replacement for a cracked screen.....in both cases, I met the seller at a local Verizon store and had the Verizon rep check them for functionality and where or not they were stolen or had a prior balance.....buying on Craigslist is not for everyone but for me it worked out fine......
  • Verizon has for sure eliminated the ability to get a subsidized upgrade phone and maintain the "Unlimited Data" plan. The work around is to purchase an upgraded phone at full price from them, or from a third party such as eBay. Then do an equipment change on the line to the updated phone. They were supposed to be eliminating that loophole also but I think you can still do this....
