Want iphone for pay-as-you-go Verizon

I use Pay-as-you-go Verizon. It works good for me, I buy $100 3x a year. I don't need internet (although it's available) because I have an ipad. The phones available through Verizon for this service are crummy and hard to text with. On the website they say I can use my own device and register it with them. If I look at Amazon to buy an iphone for this what should I look for? I think I need an unlocked Verizon iphone with a simm card. Is this correct? Thank you for you help.

vermilye,
So you started out at $40 per month, voice only? No Text? But you added unlimited data for an extra $30 a month.
Yes. My first phone was a non data flip phone & I rolled over the account with newer phones. The first iPhone required that I added data & all they offered was unlimited at $30.00, which I've kept since. The only problem is AT&T, unlike Verizon charges extra (and requires dropping the unlimited) to tether to the phone.

Verizon uses SIM cards to connect to 4G, so all Iphone 5's and later use SIM cards.
Verizon did away with CDMA for 4G phones.
You can order an unlocked Iphone 5, and 6 that come with no sim, but Verizon will install one.

Thank you everyone. I really like my Pay-As-You-Go plan with Verizon for us. We just use the telephone function. I've looked into it and they are preventing us from using a nicer phone. They want to force us into a monthly plan. I'll just keep my plain vanilla phone.

I think your original post said you are paying $100 3 times per year. Look into Page Plus. You can have your smart phone and pay less money unless you talk a lot. ๐Ÿ™‚

You can bring your own 3g smart phone (I am using a Droid X from ebay) and get 250 minutes 250 texts and a small amount of data for $12 per month. If you want auto renewal billed to your credit card, look at Kitty Wireless, which will give you a daily email of minutes/text time left, etc. Page Plus runs on the same verizon network as your verizon prepaid phone so you would have the same service.

Every city has some independent wireless shops that sell used smart phones and can set you up on page plus. You will get the same service for less money.

Regarding the sim card: I have been with Verizon for many years and have had several smart phones with them. I currently have an iPhone5. None of my phones including my current iPhone came with a sim card.

Regarding a data plan: All of my smart phones including my current iPhone5 require a data plan.

No person is completely worthless ... one can always serve as a bad example.

While no longer available, and probably would not be for everyone, I have an AT&T iPhone with the Nation 450 with Rollover plan. $40.00 per month (no text). Unlimited data was added for $30.00, but would have to be dropped if I want to use the phone as a hotspot (without jailbreaking). A grandfathered plan that I've been able to keep through 3 phone upgrades.

With a corporate discount of 15% & taxes, it runs $68.00 per month. (Data is 4G & LTE when available). By the way, AT&T's unlimited data isn't - go over 2GB in a month & they throttle you the following month (at least until the current law suit is settled)

Arizona Kid is right both my H20 and PagePlus plans are only 3G on data. For the cost and our needs 3G is plenty fast, at 10cents/MB you don't want to use it a lot. We have a pay as you go plan for my wifes iPad that is 4G for our primary network access on the road with a hotspot. We only turn the iPad plan on when we are on the road.

PagePlus just announced a 4G plan but it is only available on the monthly plan, still pay as you go but more expensive.

Does it have to be an iPhone ? Have a look at the Motorola G or Google Nexus 5. I am Canadian so I have no idea about Verizon. Currently my Moto G works with Rogers pay as you go 100$ yearly plan (no data). Planning to shop around when that expires though.
I read using my iPad, and almost everything else using my phone, so Apple and Google complement each other nicely.

TomG2, Go to the Verizon Wireless website and look under plans. It's Pay-As-You-Go. But the phones they offer are flipphones and I currently have a Samsung. I can access the internet but I'm not sure what the complete definition of a "smartphone" is. I just want one easier to text and looks nicer. Look what JimBollman says. They're using iphone 4 with a Verizon reseller.

I am familiar with their plans and since I want to use the features of a smartphone, I pay the required $45 minimum.

My wife has an off plan iPhone 4 on PagePlus a Verizon reseller. $80/year and she pay 5 cents a minute for calls and 10 cents a MB for data. If she use the $80 before the year is up she can add more dollars to account, $10 minimum.

I have an off plan iPhone 4s with H2O an ATT reseller. $100/year and I pay 5 cents a minute for calls and 10 cents a MB for data. If I use the $100 before the year is up I can add more dollars to account, $10 minimum.

Both plans roll over any money at the end of the year, I use mine so little that I had over $200 in my account so I switched to $10/3 months plan till I use up some of the extra cash. PagePlus is even better if you build up a surplus, $10/4 months.

Both have other plans for heavier users that gets a better per minute cost but no roll over.

Those are both 3G plans which are 4 times slower than 4g, or LTE.
