I think your original post said you are paying $100 3 times per year. Look into Page Plus. You can have your smart phone and pay less money unless you talk a lot. :)
You can bring your own 3g smart phone (I am using a Droid X from ebay) and get 250 minutes 250 texts and a small amount of data for $12 per month. If you want auto renewal billed to your credit card, look at Kitty Wireless, which will give you a daily email of minutes/text time left, etc. Page Plus runs on the same verizon network as your verizon prepaid phone so you would have the same service.
Every city has some independent wireless shops that sell used smart phones and can set you up on page plus. You will get the same service for less money.
