Which Casting Device To Choose?

I have an old Google Chromecast (stick style) and it works fine. I want to get another cast device for a second not-smart TV that has HDMI ports. My 5-year old Chromecast satisfies my simple needs even though I read some people don't like Chromecast because it requires WiFi. For now I will always be using WiFi.

So I was shopping on Amazon and I see Chromecast now has a third generation that dangles instead of a stick and a third generation Ultra. And then there is Roku that seems to be all the rage. And I see there are all sorts of knock-off Chromecast imitations, both first and third gen style. It looks like the third generation Chromecast is not much more expensive and it looks like the knock-offs are not much cheaper.

Which would you recommend I buy as my second Chromecast? I really don't want to have to learn a lot of new dances to get it connected. I already know the original dance.
  • I ended up with a Dolamee D5 Android box. My primary desire was to play off of a large hard drive. It has a LOT of capabilities.
  • Thanks for the feedback. I telegraphed the direction I was leaning in my first post: that is to buy another first gen Chromecast. Mainly I was looking to see if anyone knew a major reason I should buy something different. Thanks again.

I have and like the old Chromecast.

I too have the Mobley. I would like to thank whoever it was here on the forum that mentioned the Mobley DEAL of a century. Love it. KEN
  • We have a couple Rokus, and a couple Chromecasts, one of which lives in the 5er. We use them about 50/50. We have had the Roku longer, and it gives a more "polished" user experience. It is like clicking on an app on your smartphone. The Chromecast is "clunkier". You have to select something to watch on your "device", then click on the "Cast" icon on your device, then wait for it to connect via wifi, but it is not connected to or through your device. After doing that, the Chromecast works very well.

I lean towards the Roku, but the Chromecast can also turn my TV into a huge picture frame, using my photos from Google Photos, which is really cool, in my opinion.

With all that being said, we do have an ATT unlimited hotspot (Mobley), so data useage isn't a concern for us.
  • in your place, i would get another original chrome cast
or one as close to it as possible

online or download read the user manual for the ones you are looking at
and get the one that is closes to what you have now in the way it operates

i don't have any of these devices and cannot recommend a specific device
