suggesting to people, especially those who are new to RVing, to dig holes and/or trench to solve elevation or leveling problems? There were 2 different threads recently where an offered solution was to dig holes under tires to level the camper because the OP's leveling jacks weren't working. In another thread someone suggested digging a trench so the OP's waste tote would be lower than the output of the RV's sewer.I get the impression that these folks are only joking about digging holes or trenches, but to those that are new here, they could totally take it as a viable solution. Although I'd love to see the Park Ranger's face when he finds a camper digging holes in the site, I don't think we should be suggesting people dig holes in camp sites.-Michael

I have seen it done.Digging holes is not a joke. But a real PITA for the next RV that gets that site.

how hard is it to carry (2) 2x8x5foot and (2) 2x8x4foot boards.. unless you are camping on the side of a mountain .. you got it covered.I mean .. if there is a drop/rise of 7 inches across 8 foot.. find a better spot.

I can see where it might occasionally, very occasionally, be necessary to do that. I've never needed to, but whatever. The key is to repair the site upon leaving so the next guy doesn't have to deal with it. Leave your site in better condition than you found it, and all that.

It is a viable solution ..... provided it is a situation where someone has their camper on a private lot that just happens to be sloped the wrong way. Otherwise no digging without campground owners approval.

It's even happening here...Would be nice for everything in our 21st century world to not be mandated to be dumbed down or idiot proofed to the absolute lowest common denominator.
Keeps people from learning by learning what not to do, which is often more valuable than the other way around.
As well it's killing people's abilities to exercise critical thinking and doing a poor job at thinning the herd through natural selection....

Well, anyone who takes these comments literally, would do it anyway.....and is probably ignorant enough to do waaay worse things than scratching a little dirt or gravel......

I've been on this message board for a long time and I know most people's online personalities. I can usually figure out who is being serious or not. To folks new to this message board, they don't know any better.

Next you are going to want people to stop cutting limbs out of trees cause they don't have the proper skills to back into the spot. Or maybe have people stop putting nails in trees to hang laundry lines, or lights. And don't even suggest people stop the clandestine activity of slowly draining their grey tank into the bushes between campsites with a garden hose. And by all means don't ask them to stop leaving their trash inclusive of baby diapers in the fire pit.

And I agree at campsite: No digging allowed you can not fix a hole made in well packed dirt.

Been there at Yogi Bear in Sturbridge Ma. 2 sets of leveling blocks and some wood was not enough. Pulled ahead and took about 2" off the hill for the tires to go in. Still not level, but close enough.

In 16 years of full-timing including public parks, we've never had to dig a hole.

If you dig and fill it in, that ground is soft and the next RVers could have issues. RVs rarely park in the exact same spot so if you're thinking he doesn't have to work as hard to re-dig, that's not the case.

If your steps are too high, many people carry a homemade box or there are platforms you can purchase to make it easier to enter.

Digging holes is completely unnecessary.

I have recommended it. These places are normally forest service type campgrounds with dirt or gravel pads. And yes Fill in any holes when done. When I have recommended it here it was not a joke, but we all need to use common sense.
