Trick for cleaning Stainless appliances...Awesome!

The wife and I love the look of our stainless appliances, but for whatever reason the same technique we used back in the sticks and bricks isn't working in the RV. So we talked to a couple of other fulltimers and they clued us in to the Windex and Clingwrap trick.

Nope not kidding worked like a champ. We wanted to share this gem with ya'll and we even through together a quick video showing the before and after.

All the best ya'll.

  • I did not know about the cling wrap, but have known about Windex for a long time. A sales guy told when we bought our first stainless steel appliance (a microwave) not to bother with fancy expensive cleaners made for stainless steel. Just use Windex. We always have and have had great results.
  • You all might want check to see if your stainless is actually stainless. Try a magnet. Magnets work just fine on my 'stainless'.

All kinds of things clean stainless. On the boat fiberglass cleaner wax works great at removing stains on anything stainless.
  • Sometime in the 21 century (2004/5?) s/s kitchen appliances became easier to clean with the addition of various metals on the manufacturers' end in response to consumers' complaints.
Thus, the fridge and range, I purchased in October 2016, need no special products to clean them.

Older s/s appliances still need a more...thought provoking method of cleaning.

I use any ol' detergent to clean my convection microwave oven (late '90's) and toaster (mid '80's) and then rinse with vinegar and water for a smudge free finish for about 2 minutes after cleaning ;).
  • DW swears by Murphy's Oil Soap to clean stainless.

My favorite is using electric dish washer (liquid) soap on shower glass to break down all the calcium build up, and then follow with car wax. After each use of the shower, just squeegee down the glass and you won't have clean the glass for a year.

When stainless steel appliances started becoming the latest "craze" I never wanted anything with stainless. One finger print on stainless and the entire thing looks awful! Keeping them clean, especially if you have kids, is next to impossible. Yet, everyone loves the stanless look, and I guess the work to clean them too.

I can't see where your method using Windex and Cling wrap is any faster or any less work, but it is less expensive than buying stainless steel cleaners and a good alternative if you don't have any other way to clean it up.

I'm glad my refrigerator is NOT stainless steel. I worked in a hospital kitchen in 1974 though 1978 and clean a LOT of stainless steel. Had it all nice and shiny and immaculate, until the first person opened one of the freezer or refrigerator doors and there was a hand print.

Just FYI ...and then follow with car wax this in the above is the best thing for stainless steel. I use Turtle wax and you can't leave a finger print, unless your hands are wet or greasy. And then, just a quick wipe with a dry towel and it's gone.

    Works on mirrors too!
  • Looks like a good trick for cleaning. I'll try it for the heck of it. We've tried many products and found the stainless steel cleaner sold at Home Depot in their cleaning products aisle works great, spray on and wipe off.
  • Definitely will try it, we really don't like our stainless fridge for that reason.
  • I enjoy watching YouTube videos, especially about "hacks" (using everything things to accomplish something that we all think takes specialized tools).
