TT Tire Pressure Rookie Question

I have four tires on my tandem axle TT. Just checked the tire pressures, one 50, others were within 1 pound, but one was 47.5. They are currently filled with nitrogen and I know I can add air without any big issue, but is 2.5 pounds low enough to mess with.

My spec says they should be 50 psi.

Thanks in advance for your help.
  • Just how accurate is your tire gauge?

Do you routinely have it calibrated?

Did you measure tire pressure the SAME way on all 4 tires?

Tire gauges.not accurate enough/never calibrated and measuring pressure is slightly different each time

Tire pressures are good to go..........Don't make this an issue or get OCD about it :B

Check tire pressures when COLD (not driven on for at least 2 hours)
1st thing prior to hitting the road. And if 50psi is called for..fill them to 50 psi (plus/minus couple pounds----close enough)
    It isn't NASCAR
Which is another topic concerning that N2.

How many different ways are there to use a pressure gauge? :h

Air them up, op, don't take chances!

Just keep an eye on the one that was slightly lower.
  • tires are a form of a balloon. they all leak. and aluminum wheels add to it.

    was both sides in shade?

pressure checked before a trip. during ?

nitrogen, how difficult to get more.

I check air pressure before Sun Up. lowest temperature of the day and NO sun to change things.

I would start over. but that is ME.
  • Make them all the same. Bottom line. and forget about the Nitro. It is useless. Nothing but a money racket.
  • Many TT's have pressure advice based on GAWR( Gross axle weight rating), and if ST tires ( special trailer) the maximum load is calculated for 65m/h while most LT tires maximum load is calculated for 99m/h.
This means that ST tires have more deflection so more heatproduction then LT.

For these reasons its better to let me calculate an advice pressure for you , wich is probably higher then 50 psi.

If you have C-load tires ( probably because of 50 psi advice given) tiremakers dont allow higher pressure then 50 psi cold ( at 65/68 degr F), in earlyer days they allowed 10 psi extra.

To prevent overheating the 60 psi would be better for the tires in most cases , because mostly tires can yust bare enaug to carry the axle load together.

So in short , fill all up to 50 psi , mayby even 60 psi.
If you pressure device gives 60 psi , the real pressure can be, because of inacuracy , mayby even between 54 and 57 psi .
And this real pressure is what counts.
